Arkipel Award given to a film whose experiments with thematic complexities and exploration with aesthetics generate profound questions and potential for social impact.

Old Cinema, Bologna Melodrama traces cinema history while exposing social and cultural history filled with political, gender, class, and racial tensions. The film reflects on memory as contemporary reality with regards to Italian cinema. The film records and reconstructs citizens’ memory on the city and the history of cinema in order to reexamine a country’s political history. It discusses popular cinema in the global context; the city of Bologna represents the global domination of American films while allowing local voices to respond to and negotiate with cultural hegemony. The film does not need to use footages of Italian films in the 1940s to depict war time but rather captures abandoned movie theaters. This method produces a nostalgic picture of Italian film culture in the past and, at the same time, offers a critical view on the society in both the present and the past using idioms of popular culture.

Jury Award is an award given to a film receiving attention and special evaluation from the jury.

Suitcase of Love and Shame expands the concept of voyeurism by situating us (the audience) as eavesdroppers, confronting us with an uncomfortable situation for getting the access to the private lives of the characters. Anchored on the private sphere, the film comments on 1960s gender politics in the United States and exposes the tension between sexuality and morality. Suitcase of Love and Shame presents new texts from the juxtaposition of images and sound in a carefully woven dramatic structure. The film explores memory, visual, and sound, as cross media practice. In the history of cinema, the sound has been regarded as disruptive to the visual. However, A Suitcase of Love and Shame could be situated in a trajectory of films that contributes to the new perspectives on sound aesthetics in cinema. The visual serves as a metaphor of taboo, sexual repression, and self censorship in relation to the dominant values in the society. The narrative is built through texts attached to objects in the film.

The film is aesthetically rich, its technical perfection is undeniable.
