Jika sebuah sinopsis dimaksudkan sebagai rangkuman cerita dalam filem, maka Two Years at Sea hanyalah berkisah tentang seorang pria yang hidup sendiri di pedalaman hutan Skotlandia. Namun, apa yang terdapat di filem ini tidaklah hanya demikian. Seperti Jeanne Dielman yang kesehariannya menampakkan pergulatan perempuan kelas menengah modern, keseharian dalam Two Years at Sea melukiskan seseorang yang terlepas dari kultur kontemporer. Judul filem ini pun tidak mendeskripsikan apa yang terjadi di filem, melainkan apa yang telah terjadi pada sang sosok.

If a synopsis is meant to be a summary of the story in the film, then Two Years at Sea is only about a man living alone in the Scottish jungle. However, what is in this film is not only that. Like Jeanne Dielman’s daily life showcasing a struggle of modern middle-class women, the daily life in Two Years at Sea depicts a person who is detached from contemporary culture. The title of this film does not describe what happened in the film, but what has happened to its figure.
