ARKIPEL Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival 2014 has selected 29 films for the International Competition section out of 320 films submitted. Those 29 films show some basic points about the diversity of view of the world in visual approach—contemporary or modern—expressed through style consideration, and some showing its own uniqueness because they come from different corner of every continent.

The challenge of those approaching style, among others, are referring to the context of engagement and alignment both personally or collectively, both in reality of action or memory over actual political issues, diaspora, otherness, and longing for the homeland. Those alignment and engagement on one hand bring about a variety production of documentary framing, for example leading to activism strategy, form tracking, and aesthetic finding, while on the other hand would like to propose about the open role of human society. In addition, the structure of content of the selected films, some elaborating the patterns of media convergence to reveal fundamental things asserting public attention to today’s cinematic visualization.
