Lounge in ARKIPEL: An artistically significant lounge

Aside of film screening programs, Kultursinema exhibition, and Forum Festival symposium, ARKIPEL also provides a public space (lounge) as a means for the audience and film activists who come to the festival to meet and talk each other in a more fluid way. The lounge was located in Ke:Kini that is about 350 meters (or 5-minutes walk) from Kineforum which is one of the venue of ARKIPEL. It has been opened since Sunday, August 20, 2017, and usually it starts around 9 pm or after the last program on each day of the festival. This informal meeting place is held as an intimate space and it can be visited every night until the day before the Awarding Night of ARKIPEL.

With this lounge provided as one of the festival venue—and therefore it is also part of the artistic of the festival—it is expected to open wider opportunities for sharing information, thoughts and experiences among festival executives, guests, and the public. With music, drinks and snacks, visitors can join small groups; some standing, some sitting, or enjoying music played by Abi Rama and Rachmmadi Rambo (both are from the ARKIPEL committee) while dancing on the dance floor. As time passes, the more people at the lounge stomp their foot on the dance floor. “Smoke outside, drinking inside, dancing both side!” That’s the slogan on the board near the entrance.

According to Akbar Yumni, one of the ARKIPEL’s curators, the main role of lounge at film festivals is to provide an egalitarian space for the participants. For him, a lounge—or party—can be a concept which allows a cheerful atmosphere and erase the hierarchy among the subjects involved in the festival, including volunteers, organizers, filmmakers, curators, and even the public in general; they all have the same cultural position. The lounge also can be a learning forum that open up another chance to read the film environtment from diverse perspectives. Akbar Yumni then described how the lounge become a place where intellectuals, activists, gather together with cinephilia (or film-lovers) discussing anything related to film, thus our comprehension on film phenomenon is not only refer to academic theory, but also to personal experience of each person.

Akbar Yumni firmly emphasized that ARKIPEL as a festival seeks not to distance itself from its public—because this distance has been always a common problem in some film festivals. He said that the lounge plays a role to restore the tradition and essence of the festival which is a celebration (festive) and, of course, to build intimacy.

In the case of ARKIPEL, the committee served a lounge for the first time in 2015 when they held their third festival. Yuki Aditya, the Director of ARKIPEL, explained that they decided to hold a lounge because the needs of the festival were changing. In the third year, there was an increasing quantity in terms of involvement of various parties in this first experimental film festival ever in Indonesia. Not only in terms of invited participants, but also the involvement of the public in managing the festival. Therefore, there was also a need to communicate closer and improve the quality of the interaction of all parties involved in ARKIPEL. In addition, ARKIPEL as a festival that aim to develop education about cinema also opens the opportunity for its own committee members and volunteers to develop networks. “Why do you go all the way to the festival just for a film presentation, then go home? Just knowing me or Hafiz (Artistic Director of ARKIPEL), and do not know the others? In fact, we, Forum Lenteng’s members, work collectively in the organization,” he said.

ARKIPEL has changed the format of its lounge. Last year and two years ago, for the event of ARKIPEL social/kapital and ARKIPEL Grand Illusion, the festival’s lounge was located in Camden Bar which was very open for public. Andang Kelana, the Festival Manager of ARKIPEL, explained that this year ARKIPEL chose Ke:Kini as the place for festival’s lounge because it allows a quite “private” situation. Become “private” is in the sense that this format is not avoiding the presence of the people outside the festival committee and invited guests, but rather as a specific, identical, concentrated space enhancing closeness among everybody who come to the lounge.

Scott Miller Berry, a guest of ARKIPEL 2017—who was a jury of ARKIPEL 2016—said that the lounge of ARKIPEL this year provided a more “private” atmosphere. Scott said that he was prefer the lounge held in Ke:Kini because the space was filled with ARKIPEL participants and people who are engage with the festival, so the conversations arises are remained in the flow and agenda of the festival. The same opinion was also made by Rego Hardyno, one of the volunteers; while Tiwi, also a volunteer, felt that the lounge this year was very interesting and it will be more interesting if there is a game or activity that lures the participants not to be passive.

I myself felt this lounge was a unique part of the event. During several times attending several film festivals in several regions in Indonesia, I have never found a series of events that held a typically ice breaker session like this. As a person who is not so used to talk too seriously about films continuously, the presence of lounge gives me the option to familiarize myself without having to talk only about films, but it can be through other things or other trivial matters. The presence of lounge provides certain depth for ARKIPEL as a film festival; and as part of its artistic and communication strategy with its public, the ARKIPEL’s lounge is very useful for opening discussions that broaden as well as deepen the “thematic” or “outside thematic” conversations of the festival among its audience. ***
