Karya selanjutnya berjudul On Generation and Corruption.

notes on film performance by takashi makino

Performance Film by Takashi Makino

The fifth day of ARKIPEL homoludens – 6th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, precisely on 12 August 2018, something different seems to be held at the GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Indonesien, Jakarta. This time, ARKIPEL presented a performance film and film screening Takashi Makino, a Japanese artist and filmmaker who collaborated with various musicians from various parts of the world.

On this occasion, Makino presented a performance entitled Space Noise 2 which he made in 2018. In addition, he also screened two of his films entitled cinéma concret and On Generation and Corruption. In his first work, aside of projecting a video, Makino also played the sounds that he controlled from the visitor’s bench by using a pad controller and mixer. He neatly arranged moments of the moving image and moments of the sound where both can connect and support each other. By borrowing the sound and visual analysis method developed by Marko Ciciliani in his article entitled An Introspective Method for the Analysis of Musical Multimedia, this performance can be analyzed by using two approaches, namely the model of congruence in terms of synchrony and congruence in terms of kinetics.

Congruence in terms of synchrony is a parameter that indicates compatibility in terms of synchronization between sound and visual.[1] If we look at the noise material that Makino employed on the visual aspects and the noise material he employed on the sound aspect, then we can link the connection between visual phenomena and sound in his work with this approach. In addition to the approach of congruence in terms of synchrony, this first work can also be approached with the model of congruence in terms of kinetics where the parameters describe the temporal relationship between media. Because it refers to temporality, it has similarities with the synchronization parameters. However, rather than describing whether the elements of the media are different or not temporally aligned, the term kinetics actually refers to the notion of overall motion and speed.[2]

In addition, Makino in this work used several films and video projectors to create 3D experience. He also gives visitors a piece of Pulfrich filter (which at a glance looks like ordinary mica paper). Before starting his performance, Makino explained how to use the filter, i.e. by opening both eyes and covering one of them using the filter. After the author tries to see the visuals he projected on the screen using a filter, the projected visuals appear to be swirling toward the left or right, according to the position of the filter on the eyes of each audience.

After performing the first work, Makino continued by playing his second work entitled cinéma concret. What’s interesting about this work is where he took the idioms of concrete music that was developed in the early 1940’s in France, which was pioneered by Pierre Schaeffer. Concrete music itself is a way of making musical works using the recording material of concrete sounds, such as the steam sound of trains, water droplets and so on, which then modified in several ways such as acceleration of tempo, reverse recording, tape cutting and reconnecting it with modifications to turn the concrete sounds into something that sounds abstract.

One of the pioneering works of concrete music is a work by Pierre Schaeffer entitled Etude Aux Chemins De Fer, where he uses train sound recording material and modifies it into musical works with new grammar. According to Makino, he did a lot of research on concrete music because he was interested in the way it worked and he also felt that there is a similarity in his work pattern with the way concrete music works, in which Makino recorded a lot of concrete material in the form of natural scenery and collected all of it into one and modified it in such a way that the results appear to be an abstract moving images.

Makino also added that abstract is the opposition of concrete. However, Makino believes that he made something that is both concrete and abstract. In the picture he made, we can still see a certain material but we cannot necessarily understand what material it is because it has been distorted. In addition to the interesting concept that departs from the works of concrete music, the sounds in this work are also very interesting because they utilize space by using a spatial technique where the sounds projected through the loudspeakers were moved in various directions as if dancing.

The next work was titled On Generation and Corruption. In this work, he borrows a title from one of Aristotle’s essays. This work of Makino is an abstract work that finds its impetus in the clash between light and darkness. It is completely composed of superimposed images of the landscape and water sources of the city of Tokyo. In this work, there are also “electronic” sounds combined with the sound of a percussion instrument attached to it. To analyze the relationship of music and visuals on this work, we can also use the two methods of Marko Ciciliani I mentioned above.

At the end of the film performance and screening, a discussion session hosted by Yuki Aditya was opened. In this session, Makino invited visitors to ask. There was one visitor who gave his opinion about Makino’s works. He found that the correlation between sound and visuals on Makino’s works are less powerful because when he closed his eyes, he could not imagine the visual form that occurs.

Makino replied that he himself was happy that the audience would have their own way of watching his work as did the questioner. He also added that music in his two works entitled On Generation and Corruption and cinéma concret was made by two different musicians. He himself did not dictate the music makers to be based on his visual interests and simply let them interpret through the music. He only provides visual material to the music maker as a graphic notation that can be interpreted freely by the music maker because he himself does not like to dictate others. He also added that he was not careless in choosing people who would create the music in his work. He was very selective, and when he found one, he gave all the music matters to them. In the two works he presented, Makino collaborated with Jim O’Rourke and Machinefabrieak to work on the music.
