There he/she finds an unreadable map—which does not involve his/her chance to read it. Are you going to move? Where? I will stay here for a while, at least. Golden Memories: History of Indonesian Home Cinema https://arkipel.org/homoludens-history-of-indonesian-home-cinema/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-history-of-indonesian-home-cinema/#respond Sat, 18 Aug 2018 16:51:02 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=9064 Now everyone can easily record using digital devices, thanks to the advancement of technology. Starting from recording important things to the unimportant ones, recording momentous events up to merely mundane daily life. This practice of 'amateur' recording has been performed since the 1900's in Indonesia using celluloid film. However, image production at that time could only be done by several people who had access to production equipment and cinematic knowledge. The history of Indonesian cinema also tends to focus on industrial films that are made for commercial purposes.

A Unique Mixture of Old and New Cinema a la Kidlat Tahimik https://arkipel.org/homoludens-a-unique-mixture-of-old-and-new-cinema-a-la-kidlat-tahimik/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-a-unique-mixture-of-old-and-new-cinema-a-la-kidlat-tahimik/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 10:46:05 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=9002 When in comes to the cinema documenting the history, it is unusual for us to find a serious production with heavy voice of its narrator. The cinema will appear very grande by inserting footages from the original old film from a specific archive. However, we don’t find such things in the documentary of history made by Kidlat Tahimik, an artist and filmmaker from Phillipines.

Kidlat Tahimik: Reclaiming our Narrative in Cinema https://arkipel.org/homoludens-reclaiming-our-narrative-in-cinema/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-reclaiming-our-narrative-in-cinema/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 10:07:27 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=9010 It is a fact that the daily life of Asian and African society today refers to the Western culture, as a prolonged impact of the colonization in the previous centuries. The colonization stayed until this day, in a more contemporary form: the establishment of English language as an international language, until Hollywood products that dominate the pop culture consumption around the world. Kidlat Tahimik, one of the most influential filmmakers in the Philippines, even in the Southeast Asia, realized this phenomenon, and responded to it in a new, refreshing way through his works.

Exploring Medium and Pessimism of the Future on the International Competition 8 https://arkipel.org/homoludens-exploring-medium-and-pessimism-of-the-future-on-the-international-competition-8/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-exploring-medium-and-pessimism-of-the-future-on-the-international-competition-8/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2018 11:40:30 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=8987 Tremor and A Room with A Coconut View demonstrated the flexibility of medium to express the ideas from the filmmakers. The visual exploration reaches its farthest point on those two films. Apart from the medium, I think they hold certain pessimism for the future in its narration, even though it was expressed in different ways.
