Examining the Figure Behind the Camera and Its Actors https://arkipel.org/examining-the-figure-behind-the-camera-and-its-actors/ https://arkipel.org/examining-the-figure-behind-the-camera-and-its-actors/#respond Fri, 23 Aug 2019 15:00:00 +0000 https://arkipel.org/?p=10167 The common assumption is that people’s actions and words are close to reality. If they are strayed from the truth, life will lose its stable grounds. This is what happens in the films of International Competition 09: The Performativity of Actorship within Spaces of Reality screened at Friday (08/23) at GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut, Jakarta. At 7 PM, Anggraeni Widhiasih as the program curator explained her curatorial theme in front of an audience of 28, about the aspect of actorship in the two films that were about to screened: both in the public space and through cinema.

Notes on Panel 1 of Forum Discussion Series on Film Archives: Cinema Space and Film Archives https://arkipel.org/notes-on-forum-kultursinema-1/ https://arkipel.org/notes-on-forum-kultursinema-1/#respond Thu, 14 Mar 2019 06:18:00 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=9216 When we talk about archives, we might think about past things: objects that mark a particular era, piling up and accumulating dust because no one wants to dwell on it anymore. Archives are increasingly buried by new things that continuously arriving. However, in reality, archives can always be re-read through new perspectives to continue the production of knowledge. In terms of film, this recycles process is done through programming and curatorial practices: how to present the film archive so that the context is relevant to the audience today.

Kidlat Tahimik: Reclaiming our Narrative in Cinema https://arkipel.org/homoludens-reclaiming-our-narrative-in-cinema/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-reclaiming-our-narrative-in-cinema/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 10:07:27 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=9010 It is a fact that the daily life of Asian and African society today refers to the Western culture, as a prolonged impact of the colonization in the previous centuries. The colonization stayed until this day, in a more contemporary form: the establishment of English language as an international language, until Hollywood products that dominate the pop culture consumption around the world. Kidlat Tahimik, one of the most influential filmmakers in the Philippines, even in the Southeast Asia, realized this phenomenon, and responded to it in a new, refreshing way through his works.

The visual exploration reaches its farthest point on those two films. Apart from the medium, I think they hold certain pessimism for the future in its narration, even though it was expressed in different ways.
