Starting from recording important things to the unimportant ones, recording momentous events up to merely mundane daily life. This practice of 'amateur' recording has been performed since the 1900's in Indonesia using celluloid film. However, image production at that time could only be done by several people who had access to production equipment and cinematic knowledge. The history of Indonesian cinema also tends to focus on industrial films that are made for commercial purposes.

Behind the Screen of ARKIPEL homoludens: Building Intimacy through the Lounge https://arkipel.org/homoludens-building-intimacy-through-the-lounge/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-building-intimacy-through-the-lounge/#respond Wed, 15 Aug 2018 08:58:53 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=8920 This year’s Lounge is located at Ke:Kini, a collective space to meet up, work or make art in Jalan Cikini Raya. The Lounge starts at 09.00 PM, or when the screening is done for the day. It has been running since August 10, 2018 – until the day before ARKIPEL’s closing night – but I only started attending in the second day. The sky was clear that night; there were no traces of heavy rain from the day before.

British Experimental Film: A Play on Space and Shape https://arkipel.org/homoludens-british-experimental-film-a-play-on-space-and-shape/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-british-experimental-film-a-play-on-space-and-shape/#respond Sun, 12 Aug 2018 12:11:34 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=8815 Mainstream films are often trapped with a focus on stories without regard to visual aesthetics. Oftentimes the provision of visual meaning in image production is neglected, intentionally or not, consciously or unconsciously. Apparently, this is the trend that is being resisted by the films screened in British Experimental Film session on August 11, 2018, at 16.00 at GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Indonesien, Jakarta, with Manshur Zikri as its curator. The three films screened in that program tend to go into a play on space and shape. The audience was given pieces of images without a binding narrative framework, so they were left to imagine it themselves. The film shows a space without explaining the history of said space; instead, they prefer to show the process of interaction between the people within it who continue to plays. Something I can’t quite fathom yet due to its abstractness.

The Power of Language in Cinema https://arkipel.org/homoludens-the-power-of-language-of-cinema/ https://arkipel.org/homoludens-the-power-of-language-of-cinema/#respond Sun, 12 Aug 2018 08:55:47 +0000 http://arkipel.org/?p=8809 I believe in the power of language. I believe in the power of words. In my subjective view, words could change history, words could become instruments of struggle for either country and specific groups as they fight for independence. See how Martin Luther King Jr. used words in his role as leader of the civil rights movement in 1954 in America. See how in our own country, Sukarno's speech can evoke a sense of nationalism. Even so, it must be admitted that words can also help political authorities perpetuate their tyrannical power. Therefore, with ‘Language at Intimate View’ as the theme, International Competition 04 makes me curious about how language will be displayed in image production.
