Peransi Award is given to Kodachrome (2013) by the K-14 Collective from Belgium. Forum Lenteng Award is given to A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (or Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis, 2016) by Lav Diaz from Philippines.

Notes on Curatorial of “Looking at Costa Cinematic Realism”

Zikri said that three films in this curatorial program are connected because of the production method chosen by Costa. He tried to stay in Fontainhas, recording all three with DV cameras without involving a lot of the crew. The intimacy formed between subjects with him, which then able to cut the existing gap. Interpretation of the scene and visual also left entirely to his players, describing a real quality of life of citizens in Fontainhas.

After Nation: A Memoria Passionis in Cinema

Indeed when I watched this film I did get the impression of memoria passionis or collective memory about the suffering. The nation building process of Philippines in the era of Spanish colonialism was related closely to the stories happened after the death of Jose Rizal as a martyr of the revolution. In terms of context, the historical background of Indonesia is actually can be told in similar way. The collective memory of the suffering experienced by Indonesian mainly related to the colonialism era and the events surrounding the year 1965. Unfortunately, we seem to not having the same anxiety and persistence to create a work revealing our qualified memoria passionis history.

On “A Trial by Cinema” Screening Program

With 442 minutes in total, Hitler: A Film from Germany was one of the longest films that Kineforum ever screened. Directed by Hans-Jurgen Syberber, this film was produced in Western German, England, and French in 1977; and in Indonesia this year through ARKIPEL, and became part of curatorial program held by Akbar Yumni. Acting as film critics and Forum Lenteng member, he chose ‘Cinematic Judgement’ as its curatorial title as based on this movie, Adolf Hitler didn’t get the ‘punishment’ he deserved aesthetically.

Film Your Life! – Making Celluloid Film in the Midst of Digital Explosion

The fact that everyone has camera in their pocket and able to make film is very remarkable things, moreover in the videos they made is unique and artistic. But the condition will be very different if the object recorded is a fight between us and our mom or other too private matters. The development of digital also has made Scott’s perspective on how he watches films changed. We can assume here that criticism to cinema will grow along with the development of technology.

From “Corrosive” to “Angst”

Monday afternoon, August 22nd 2016, I attended two programs of International Competition in ARKIPEL, in a row. First screening was started at 1 pm, and the second one was at 4 to 6 pm. I also watched the International Competition 9: “Angst”, curated by Akbar Yumni, a Forum Lenteng member and also film critics.

Anthropocene itself is a term used many times by the curator and is actually a relatively new term and not quite popular yet. Anthropocene refers to the change of conditions and situations that took place on Earth which is increasingly influenced by humans. Looking at the past, in millions of years, the nature has been playing a role in determining its fate, but since the 1950s, it is humans who have take the control in extremity.

Notes on “Imagery and imagination — uneasy trip to China”

Forty people who attended this program almost fill the entire seats of Kineforum. The audience laughter can be heard several times in the scenes where humor was encountered. In the discussion session, several questions were asked either to Zimu Zhang and Wang Bo. Licensing issues by the Chinese government did not escape to be mentioned.

The story of Nepal as well as the struggle of this developing country and the challenge is disclosed in Asian Young Curator program titled Voices: Alternative Nepali Cinema. The program is curated by Nischal Oli, an art producer, curator, and writer based in Kathmandu, Nepal and founder of Kala Kosh (institutions that want to redefine the context in which art is created in Nepal globally). The program is held on August 22, 2016, at Kineforum, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta, 19:00 pm.

Empathy from the Films in the Curatorial of “Beyond”

Then, satisfaction was the reaction I got from watching World Cup. This film was nothing but slow, 108 minutes felt like a 30-minute film, thanks to its playful narration. Some shots were interrelated although they weren’t really the core portrayal of Malas Brothers’ work, and they serve themselves as satire.
