Filem pertama dibuka dengan memutarkan And What is the Summer Saying.

And What is the Summer Saying.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Finding Collective Desire in Ethnographic Films” css=”.vc_custom_1566551531369{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]
Thursday (8/22) 1:00 pm, International Competition 04 program screening was held at GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Jakarta. The films screened were And What is the Summer Saying directed by Payal Kapadia (India) and The Future Cries Beneath Our Soil directed by Pham Thu Hang (Vietnam). Luthfan Nur Rochman as selector opened the screening with a short introduction on the program titled Observation to the Periphery.

The first film screened was And What is the Summer Saying. This film shows natural landscapes and human presence as its inhabitant, passive, and their face is not shown clearly. Cinematic construction seems to be accentuated on the relation of human with nature in co-habitation and its myth, specifically in India. Those myths are recounted by Indian people who incorporate those myths into their life.

The screening continued with the film The Future Cries Beneath Our Soil that tells us the story of a group of elders spending the rest of their lives in a village called Tan Hiap. This ethnographic film is very intimate with the subjects within. It is shown through their everyday conversations, singing and drinking, intrigues and quarrels, to the death of one of the subjects displayed sincerely without the intention to exploit.

Due to the time limit, sixteen audience present in the screening room had no chance to discuss the films. But I took a chance to have a short discussion on the program with Luthfan. He briefly explained that the curatorial aimed to find cinematic construction of ethnographic films. These ethnographic films were scouted to find their collective desire through cinematic elements. After listening to Luthfan’s brief explanation, it could be understood that the collective desire he mentioned means the myths of the people found in And What is the Summer Saying. Those myths are well alive within the people because they believe in those myths, and those beliefs make them consentient and stay together. It is similar to what is seen in The Future Cries Beneath Our Soil in which the sense of collective is present among them who spend their time singing and drinking together.

Both films show such activities as well as the belief that unite the people. The collectiveness creates a collective desire, and it will be embedded in the memory of those who experience such things.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”10139,10141″ img_size=”large” onclick=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Thursday (8/22) 1:00 pm, International Competition 04 program screening was held at GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Jakarta.
