Saya mendapat berbagai macam respon seusai pemutaran filem.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Mirror on A Strange Loop” css=”.vc_custom_1566576037796{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]
In front of the 18 audiences who came to the screening, Otty Widasari, as the selector who present the program of International Competition 05: Evolutionary Memetic Behaviour in A Strange Loop, opened the screening session held on Thursday, August 22 2019, in the Auditorium of Goethehaus, by reading some parts of her curatorial text. She explained that the film Weirdloop (2018) – directed by Alexander Cooper screened that afternoon – was sent by the director in the form of a video blog (vlog) through his personal channel on Youtube.

As we know, a vlog is a cultural phenomenon reaching its popularity by doing the self-replicating process though the platform of internet culture. The dissemination of this idea and cultural phenomena, by Richard Dawkins, is explained to have the same mechanism for explaining the principles of evolution at the genetic level. Dawkins calls this replication unit in cultural evolution as a meme. I refer to the meme definition of Otty’s curatorial text which reads, “Memes are imitations of ideas, behaviors or styles that spread from person to person in the body of culture”.

At least to understand further the idea Otty has given through her curatorial, we need to read this 131 minutes of Alexander Cooper through the framework of an internet meme. The director, use the term weirdloop as an allegory of meme aesthetics. The dissemination of both verbal and visual information was processed by the director as critiques to reflect on the common notions regarding many weirdnesses that actually becomes something natural. Cooper has repeatedly interviewed the public experience regarding the routinity that generally relatable to our daily life. The image-making process that seems to happen spontaneously without any preparations, impulsive and disorganized fragments of scenes are made into his aesthetic and way to criticize.

I received various kind of responses after the film screening. Luthfan Nur Rochman – a selector of the International Competition of ARKIPEL bromocorah – regrets Cooper’s remarks at the end of the film. He says that the statement actually broke the imagination that had been built in the film. Another response that I got from some of the audiences was about their difficulty in following the film. Aside from its long duration, some dialogues in this film are often unclear. I also had similar confusion and difficulties. Such feeling occurred to me until I left the auditorium. “What did I just watch?” I thought to myself. Because it feels as if meaningless information has just stuffed into me. However, it is indeed the highest achievement of art; to offer a space of contemplation. At least, I reflect again on the incursion of information I consume on a daily basis.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”10145,10146,10147″ img_size=”large” onclick=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

At least to understand further the idea Otty has given through her curatorial, we need to read this 131 minutes of Alexander Cooper through the framework of an internet meme.
