[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Watching the Past in Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia Screening Session” css=”.vc_custom_1566802127608{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

On Saturday (08/25), two sessions of film screenings took place as a part of Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia, a joint exhibition with Ministry of Culture and Education, National Archive, State Film Company, and the National Museum. The first session exhibited the old digitized film from the collection of Film Development Centre of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The second one was a tribute to Abduh Aziz, partnering with Koalisi Seni Indonesia. The films themselves were The Long March (1950) by Usmar Ismail, Inspektur Rachman (1950) by Moh. Said and Nawi Ismail, and Pulang (1952) by Basuki Effendi; while the second session exhibited Kita vs. Korupsi (2012), an anthology film by Lasja Sutanto, Emil Heradi, Ine Febrianti, and Chairun Nisa. The total of the audience was 47 people.

Since 10 AM, the Hall B Auditorium of Museum Nasional was already crowded by students in their white-and-grey uniform. They came from SMAN 74, South Jakarta, all set to watch The Long March. The film told a story about the long march of the Siliwangi Division soldiers during the Dutch’s Military Aggression, focusing on the figure of Captain Sudarso, and the personal dilemmas he faced throughout the march.

The gap between films was only 10-15 minutes, so, watching these films felt like a fun long marathon run. The next film, Inspektur Rachman, told a story about an inspector who had to catch a gang of thieves, headed by his father. While Pulang was about the conflict on the ex-soldier in the revolution period, and the point between having to face modernism while he cannot let go of his past. The screening of Pulang was also attended by students from SMA Triguna.

One of the audiences, Umi Lestari, an academic and film critic, admitted that she felt grateful to able watching the film for the first time due to the limited access. She also expressed a brief comment on Inspektur Rachman. “Inspektur Rachman seems to be inspired by Dr. Huyung’s works, through the shots and the placement of the chair, and the scene of the dialogue from behind the chair. The lighting is also quite detailed.”

Meanwhile, she compared Pulang with Lewat Djam Malam (After the Curfew), regarding an ex-soldier questioning his position in this independent world. “But, in Lewat Djam Malam, the main character who is unable to keep up with independence is killed off. While Pulang shows a different kind of nationalism in which the main character previously stuck in the past is moved when he met a doctor. Then he wants to be a doctor, a paramedic. The only thing capable of saving us is medicines, (there is a message that) the future lies in that kind of modernism.”

The next film is Kita vs. Korupsi, an anthology filled with anti-corruption messages. Oming Putri from Koalisi Seni Indonesia attended the screening, and she stated that this film is still relevant up to this day. “Corruption causes major incidents to happen to our lives in the present times, such as forest fires.”

One of the impressive parts for Oming is Selamat Siang, Risa! by Ine Febriyanti. “The part depicts a difficult situation of an honest person.” The film focuses on the dilemma of the character played by Tora Sudiro when facing a bribe offer when his family is going through hard times.

Abduh Aziz produces Kita vs. Korupsi. As ex-head of State Film Company, he is one of the initiators of Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia exhibition, so that the Kultursinema team considers the screening session as necessary. Oming admitted that she attended the session especially because she wanted to draw closer to Abduh’s works. “Even if the CD has been released, when I found out that ARKIPEL was going to screen Kita vs. Korupsi, I wanted to watch it on a cinema screen.”

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”10192,10191,10190,10189,10188″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
