[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Looking at Cinema Through Different Frames” css=”.vc_custom_1566803989322{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The screening of International Competition 10 was held on Saturday (24/8) in GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Jakarta at 1 PM. The films in competition are The Plato by Mohammad Ghanbari (Iran), and Distant Tropics by Marcelo Costa (Brazil). This final International Competition screening was opened by Robby Ocktavian, who has selected and curated this program.

The Plato opened the curatorial program Cinema Observes Cinema. This film is about the difficulties that a man faces in taking care of his old donkey, which is happening simultaneously with the infiltration of technology development into his village. Plato does not only struggle to raise his donkey, but he also has to endure the villagers’ mockery because he still uses his donkey to carry his grass. Machines are available in his village, and they will make his work easier if he uses a motorbike instead of his donkey. When Plato decides to stop using his donkey and turns to a motorbike, he has to face moral issues in his surroundings.

In its cinematographic presentation, The Plato plays with perspective. From the donkey’s perspective, we see how an animal becomes a dumb witness of the society, and how it becomes an observer of the people who treat him as a mere animal. Also, there is a scene showing a video clip on a gadget screen. This particular scene demonstrates how the development of technology infiltrates the village, and how the framing of a specific short clip is capable of directing society’s thinking.

The last film in the screening was Distant Tropics. This film is about a journal of a war survivor who remains in a coastal area. He then lives together with the locals. We see how he interacts with the locals until some conflicts arise. The narrative is told through the periscope-framed images. As a result, it gives the impression that the audience is looking at and observing what the survivor is experiencing within her time in the coastal area.

These two films present images in particular frames as a brief reminder of the past, and they also offer another way of looking at the environment. Compared to the images that are not presented in a particular way of framing, these experimentations with framing give a different impression to the audience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”10218,10217,10216″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
