Metode in disebut dengen phytogram.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Master Class with Scott Miller Berry: Getting to Know Celluloid as The Early Medium for Moving Image Recording” css=”.vc_custom_1567334381674{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The end of ARKIPEL bromocorah – 7th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival doesn’t reduce the passion of its organizers and participants. Just a day after ARKIPEL’s closing night, a master class studying the use of celluloid in filmmaking was held in the headquarter of Forum Lenteng in Tanjung Barat, South Jakarta. Scott Miller Berry led this master class. The lessons were about exercise on using 16 mm camera, how to put a film in the camera, washing the film, up to the screening of a film made by the participants. In this occasion, there are 9 participants in the master class, namely Valencia Winata, Maria Deandra, Taufiqurrahman, Afrian Purnama, Dhanurendra Pandji, I Gede Mika, Dhuha Ramadhani, Theo Nugraha and myself. Some other Forum Lenteng’s member who wasn’t participant observed the process, and at times the joined the interaction with the celluloid Scott has brought.

The class was held for two days, started from Tuesday, 27 August 2019 since 1 PM. Scott opened the class by screening some films produced in his previous workshops as an example for the participants. Then he continued it by demonstrating the way to operate a 16 mm camera. All participants observed him full of curiosity.

Aside from that, we also learned to put the film roll into the camera. At first, we found it difficult because the size was quite small. Actually, the installation of a film roll to the camera must be done in the darkroom. However, in this class, we did it in a lighted room by using a sample film as an exercise to install the real one.

The class was continued by operating the camera, and the participants began to record. When using the film to record, the operator needs to be careful because of the limited duration of image to record and the limitation of this mechanic camera that doesn’t use any electricity in its mechanism. At first, we recorded carefully and selectively. But at last, we tend to follow our intuition during the recording process, and we were thrilled.

The activity of washing film ended our first day. Some participants went into the darkroom. Lighted by only red light, our vision was limited, and we used only our sense of touch. Chemical solutions were put in plastic buckets, and the celluloid was ready to dip into it. The washing process was ended in about 10 minutes. Those who went into the darkroom was dazzled by the light once they went out. But afterward, we were focused on our happiness in seeing small images on the celluloid as the result of our recording that afternoon.

The next morning, we also did similar activities. But that day, Scott divided the participants into two groups. The first group recorded images by using a camera, the second one recorded images by using plants. Capturing images by using plants is a kind of experiment we did by using celluloid. The method was named as phytogram. Plants, flowers, strains of hair, and even a creature such as dead ant were eternalized by using celluloid as part of our experiment. We dipped the collected objects into a special solution consisted of borax and vitamin C. The film could record those objects because of the chemical process we have done previously. After a few hours, the two groups exchanged activities. After about 30 minutes, those objects were taken out and pasted on the celluloid.

Same as yesterday, we washed the films we used to record. We experienced a slight difficulty during the drying process. It happened because the film roll was too long and it was easy to tangle. But patiently, we started to be able to organize the film and roll it back neatly.

The zenith of this master class was when we finally watched the films we have recorded and washed through a 16 mm projector. We were thrilled to see the result of the images we have recorded. The image might be not so smooth, but this is because we are still learning, and we didn’t mind so much about the image’s quality.

Through this master class, I personally get a glimpse of the recording process in the previous generations; the materials were minimal and it requires high precision. During those process, there are so many necessities we must fulfill; one of them is making a dark room. But aside from the growth of my knowledge about moving image, I also learn to respect the process, time, and the frame during the recording process.

I remember Afrian Purnama’s statement, who also participated in the master class. He uttered his opinion on the first day of the class, that he wishes to know the procession of image-making ritual occurs. I consider that analog film making process is a ritual that must undergo a long procession starting from installing the film to the camera, selecting the images to record, the washing process, till it can be screened to the public. Recording by using analog technology eventually is not only about the final result, but also about how we enjoy the difficulties and the process that happens within it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”10320,10321,10322,10323,10324,10325″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
