[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Opening Day of ARKIPEL Twilight Zone 2021″ css=”.vc_custom_1637995976722{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]ARKIPEL Twilight Zone – 8th Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival 2021 opened online at 4 PM West Jakarta Time, on November 26th, 2021. With Dini Adanurani as the MC, the opening event was conducted in both Indonesian and English. As the Festival Director, Yuki Aditya thanked everyone involved who have supported this festival from its beginning.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, everyone was faced with options to be responded promptly. It interrupted the space and means of our interaction. Many art affairs or events changed their patterns and gears.

Yuki mentioned the difference felt by ARKIPEL organizers this year due to its online nature. The festival was initially prepared for last year but due to the pandemic, they took a different strategy for this year. ARKIPEL are now able to screen nine international competition programs—curated from 1,537 films submitted last year, the Candrawala program, Special Presentation with curatorials by Kim Eunhee and Philip Widmann, and Special Screenings.

All programs will run for the next three weeks, from November 28th to December 18th, 2021, starting with the first screenings. These films will be available to watch at Bioskop Forum Lenteng and also online. Further information on this can be found on arkipel.org.

As the Artistic Director, Hafiz Rancajale stated that Twilight Zone was the theme that the ARKIPEL team decided on last year, at the beginning of the pandemic, but was only able to be eventually held today. However, issues that arose from the pandemic and those that can be found in the Twilight Zone have correlations to each other. Aside from Dini, Yuki, and Hafiz, May Adadol Ingawanij, a film curator, was also present on the screen. In this opportunity, May will share her experience and research in cinema.

When introducing May as the keynote speaker, Hafiz noted that her speech is very relevant to how those in the Southeast Asian region, or wherever they may be, see the hidden possibilities of cinema in “areas” that were previously unread. He further noted that it is important to observe the development of contemporary art and film. ARKIPEL will continue to look for possibilities to explore and to offer to the public. The opening lasted for less than 10 minutes and was followed by the Forum Festival, starting with the keynote speech from May Adadol which was moderated by Prashasti Wilujeng Putri.
