Ada empat filem yang ditayangkan: Bitter with a Shy Taste of Sweetness oleh Saif Alsaegh (AS, 2019), It’s a Long Way from Amphioxus oleh Kamal Aljafari (Jerman, 2019), Dream Delivery oleh Zheng Yuan (Tiongkok, 2018), dan and a tiny place that is hard to touch oleh Shelly Silver (AS, 2019).

Filem ketiga Dream Delivery, menceritakan kehidupan para pekerja pengiriman. Filem terakhir a tiny place that is hard to touch, filem terpanjang dalam program ini, dengan sabar mengamati kehidupan penghuni kanal di Tatekawa, Tokyo.

One of the screenings is a special film presentation curated by Philip Widmann, a film curator and programmer from Germany. Widmann is a selection committee of the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, and has created film programs for Image Forum Tokyo and Hamburg International Short Film Festival. This time, Widmann curates a screening titled Common Places of Suspension, as part of ARKIPEL’s collaboration with Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival–with the support of Goethe Institut Indonesien.

There are four films presented respectively: Bitter with a Shy Taste of Sweetness by Saif Alsaegh (USA, 2019), It’s a Long Way from Amphioxus by Kamal Aljafari (Germany, 2019), Dream Delivery by Zheng Yuan (China, 2018), and a tiny place that is hard to touch by Shelly Silver (USA, 2019).

All films significantly feature a voice-over and/or written narration combined with distinctive visual vocabularies. The first film Bitter with a Shy Taste of Sweetness–a film about a man escaping from Iraq to USA–distorts and reconstructs his memory of escaping and being able to survive. The framings are mostly tilted, the camera swirls, images are superimposed. It is a melancholic reflection of the past and imagination of the future. Meanwhile, the second film–It’s a Long Way from Amphioxus–takes place in an immigration office where people are waiting, confined, wandering around and inside the building. The instructions, infrastructures, and numbers assigned to them limit their movements. In a haunting ending, the humans are seemingly gone, replaced with the red colored-numbers that stay, float and flood the screen.

The third film Dream Delivery narrates the life of delivery workers. It emphasizes the position of the workers as the unremembered and the exploited. For them, sleeping becomes a risky decision and a momentary refuge; an act suspended in between their individual worlds and the fast-paced, cruel world outside. The last film, a tiny place that is hard to touch, the longest film in the program, patiently observes the life of inhabitants of a canal in Tatekawa, Tokyo. The narration shifts from talking about an outsider’s–an American’s– intrusive gaze at the city to the contemplation of survival of species on Earth. The visual use of lines, patterns, and textures defines and shapes the movement of the city and its inhabitants. In the film, everydayness becomes something that is unrecognizable and alien. It also briefly touches on the trauma and memory of World War II in Japan.

In his curatorial text, Widmann explains that the selection has been put together to talk about the struggles to survive, using films as the example and question to make us probe deeper into the geographical, cultural, socio-economic, aesthetical, and emotional displacement. As a result, the displacement feels more like “the strange state of being suspended someplace in between”. Watching this program during the pandemic–a catastrophe that has changed our structure of living–brings this sense of suspension even closer to us, to the audience.

Special Presentation 01: Common Places of Suspension is free to be viewed from 28th November to 4th December 2021 at http://festival.arkipel.org.
