Astronom, fisikawan, dan matematikawan Barat melintas lautan untuk mengakses fasilitas dan ilmu pengetahuan Timur. Sedangkan pemikir dari Timur mengadaptasikan gagasan Barat dengan filosofi mereka sendiri. Belajar dan mengembangkan ilmu bersama, kedua belahan dunia saling melihat nilai dan kepentingan sesama. Sampai datangnya revolusi industri, menggeser keseimbangan timbangan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Selama ratusan tahun, mereka memaksa gagasan bahwa mereka adalah peradaban paling sempurna, budaya lain masih biadab dan primitif. Ratusan negara di Afrika, Asia, dan Amerika Selatan ditekan untuk mempelajari bahasa mereka, menggunakan ideologi mereka, dan menyembah Tuhan mereka, demi \u201cmengembangkan negara lain\u201d. Dengan senjata dan senapan, mereka menempatkan diri di puncak tertinggi hierarki.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dalam Kompetisi Internasional 7:<\/span> Perjalanan Aneh ke Baratnya Barat<\/span><\/i>, kurator program <\/span>Otty Widasari<\/b> mempersoalkan bagaimana Budaya Barat mempertahankan <\/span>status quo<\/span><\/i> melalui imigrasi, kolonialisme, dan media. Hingga sekarang, mereka masih dilihat sebagai acuan politik dan ekonomi. Lewat kuratorialnya, Otty menawarkan ide bahwa di bawah kedok kekuasan Barat adalah pilar-pilar pelajaran Timur dari masa sebelumnya. Tembok yang digunakan sebagai pemisah dapat diruntuhkan ketika kita mengakui pentingnya pengetahuan Barat dan Timur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Untuk pertama kali aku menyaksikan ARKIPEL <\/span>Twilight Zone – 8<\/span><\/i>th<\/span><\/i> Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival<\/span><\/i> secara daring. Sejak pertama kali aku menghadiri festival di 2018, ARKIPEL menegaskan bahwa sinema dapat sepenuhnya dinikmati dalam ruang gelap dengan suara kitar dan layar lebar. Sempat batal tahun lalu berkat sebuah situasi global, penyelenggara festival harus segera adaptif dan melakukan kompromi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aku sendiri sudah tidak asing dengan kegiatan menonton melalui situs siaran legal maupun ilegal. Tetapi ketika menonton filem dari program ini melalui layar laptop, ada sesuatu yang hilang. Kegelapan dari ruang pemutaran, bisikan orang sebelah, dan diskusi mendalam setelah pemutaran. Detail-detail yang sudah kukenal sebagai \u201ckegiatan nonton di ARKIPEL\u201d. Kali ini, tempat dan waktu filem mulai kutentukan sendiri. Tanpa kata-kata pembuka dari kurator, aku pencet tombol segitiga untuk memulai filem pertama dan satu-satunya dari Kompetisi Internasional 7:<\/span> Perjalanan Aneh ke Baratnya Barat<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Karya <\/span>Nelson Yeo<\/b>, <\/span>Mary, Mary, So Contrary<\/span><\/i> (2019) mempertanyakan apa itu gaya hidup orang kulit putih yang selama ini dipuji media. Filem dari Singapura ini mengambil cuplikan antara filem Barat, <\/span>The Lady Vanishes <\/span><\/i>(1938), dan Timur, <\/span>Spring in a Small Town<\/span><\/i> (1948) untuk dipersatukan menjadi sebuah kolase bergerak. Dari judul saja, sang pembuat filem mengacu pada referensi Barat. Mengambil sesuatu yang terkenal dari budaya Barat, dan bermain melalui kata-kata.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Karakter utamanya adalah seorang wanita Asia bernama Ma Li. Ma Li tidak bahagia dalam hidupnya. Ia tidak senang dengan pernikahannya, sampai ia membunuh suaminya, ditambah dengan mimpi-mimpi aneh yang mengganggu pemikirannya. Sampai suatu saat, Ma Li menemukan dirinya telah menjadi wanita kulit putih bernama Mary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs this the western paradise everyone talked about?\u201d<\/span><\/i>, tertulis di layar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary sedang berada di sebuah kereta. Keseharian Mary diisi dengan melayani orang tidur. Ternyata, Mary mampu memasuki mimpi mereka. Sampai suatu saat, Mary menemukan dirinya dalam mimpi suami Ma Li yang sudah meninggal. Sang suami memanggil terus, <\/span>Ma Li, Ma Li, Ma Li<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Walaupun tidak pernah bertemu, jiwa Ma Li dan Mary saling terhubung. Mereka saling menemukan sesama dalam dunia mimpi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary, Mary, So Contrary<\/span><\/i> merangkum pertanyaan: apakah kehidupan benar lebih baik di Barat?<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Selama bertahun-tahun budaya Barat memuji dirinya, sehingga muncul tanggapan bahwa keadaan di sana pasti lebih daripada di sini. Hadirlah Ma Li, seorang wanita dari Timur yang tidak senang dengan situasinya. Saat Ma Li berada di tubuh Mary, ia menemukan kehidupan yang sama absurdnya.<\/span><\/p>\n

Propaganda Barat menempatkan tinggi standar kehidupan orang kulit putih. Melihat Mary yang juga ingin kabur dari nasibnya, filem ini seakan menunjukkan bagaimana retaknya gagasan eurosentris. \u201cOrang kulit putih lebih unggul\u201d atau \u201corang kulit putih lebih pintar\u201d, pernyataan-pernyataan bukan berdasarkan fakta, melainkan ego. Ketika menjejak kembali catatan-catatan sejarah, ilmu pengetahuan Barat tidak akan berdiri tanpa ilmu Timur dan kebalikannya. Seperti Ma Li dan Mary, kedua budaya saling mempengaruhi. Jika kita membedah kekuatan Barat, akan ditemukan jejak-jejak pengaruh dari Timur tersembunyi di dalam fondasinya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Western astronomers, physicians, and mathematicians sailed across oceans to access the Eastern tools and knowledge. Meanwhile the Eastern thinkers adopted Western ideas into their own philosophy. Learning and developing knowledge side by side, both saw each other’s values and mutual interests. That was until the industrial revolution came, shifting the balance of the scales.<\/span><\/p>\n

For centuries, the West insists on the idea that they are the most perfect civilization, other cultures were still savage and primitive. Hundreds of countries in Africa, Asia and South America are pressured to learn their language, use their ideology, and worship their God, in order to \u201cdevelop other countries\u201d. With guns and rifles, they place themselves at the very top of the hierarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n

In International Competition 7: <\/span>Bizarre Journey to the West of the West<\/span><\/i>, program curator <\/span>Otty Widasari <\/b>questioned how Western culture maintains the status quo through immigration, colonialism, and the media. Until now, they are still seen as a political and economic reference point. Through her curatorial program, Otty offers the idea that under the guise of Western power are the pillars of Eastern lessons from the past. The dividing wall can be torn down when we recognize the importance of Western and Eastern knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time I watched ARKIPEL Twilight Zone – 8th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival online. Since my first time going to the festival in 2018, ARKIPEL stated that cinema can be fully enjoyed in a dark room with circular sound and widescreen. Canceled last year due to a global pandemic situation, festival organizers had to quickly adapt and compromise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I myself am no stranger to the online viewing mode through legal and illegal streaming sites. But when watching movies from this program through the laptop screen, something is missing. The darkness of the screening room, the whispers of the person nearby, and the deep discussion after the screening. Details that I already know as \u201cthe festival experience at ARKIPEL\u201d. This time, I decided the place and time of the screening. Without any opening speech from the curator, I pressed the triangle button to start the first and only film of International Competition 7: <\/span>Bizarre Journey to the West of the West.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Nelson Yeo<\/b>‘s film, <\/span>Mary, Mary, So Contrary<\/span><\/i> (2019) questions what the white lifestyle that has been praised by the media consists of. This Singaporean film borrows footage from the Western film, <\/span>The Lady Vanishes<\/span><\/i> (1938), and the Eastern film, <\/span>Spring in a Small Town<\/span><\/i> (1948) to be combined into a moving collage. From the title alone, the filmmaker refers to Western canon. Take something famous from Western culture, and riff the words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main character is an Asian woman named Ma Li. Ma Li is not happy with her life. She is not content with her marriage to the point that she kills her husband, coupled with strange dreams that disturb her thoughts. Until one day, Ma Li finds herself becoming a white woman named Mary.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs this the western paradise everyone talked about?\u201d written on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary is on a train. Mary’s days are filled with caring for bedridden people. As it turned out, Mary is able to enter their dream. Until one day, Mary finds herself in the dream of Ma Li’s dead husband. The husband kept calling, <\/span>Ma Li, Ma Li, Ma Li<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though they never met, Ma Li and Mary’s souls are connected. They find each other in the dream world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary, Mary, So Contrary<\/span><\/i> sums up the question: is it true that life is better in the West?<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years Western culture has been praising itself, so the response is that things must be better there than here. There comes Ma Li, a woman from the East feeling displeased with her situation. When Ma Li is in Mary’s body, she finds life just as absurd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Western propaganda places the living standard of white people higher than the rest of the world. Looking at Mary who also wants to run away from her fate, this film seems to show how fractured eurocentric ideas are. \u201cWhite people are superior\u201d or \u201cwhite people are smarter\u201d \u2014 statements not based on facts, but on ego. When tracing the historical records, Western science will not stand without Eastern science and vice versa. Like Ma Li and Mary, the two cultures influence each other. If we dissect the power of the West, we will find traces of the influence of the East hidden in its foundations.<\/span><\/p>\n
