Acara ARKIPEL Catch-22 – <\/span>9<\/span>th<\/span> Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival telah berlangsung selama dua hari. Program yang dikuratori oleh <\/span>Luthfan Nur Rochman <\/b>ini menayangkan <\/span>Chronicles of That Time <\/span><\/i>(2021) dan <\/span>Women Minor Speculation <\/span><\/i>(2021), dihadiri sekitar 16 orang. Kedua filem tersebut menampilkan kisah perjalanan melalui lintasan waktu dan tempat yang bergerak melaju dalam perjalanan yang panjang.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women Minor Speculation <\/span><\/i>disutradarai oleh <\/span>Nicole Hewitt<\/b> berasal dari Kroasia. Filem ini mencoba memotret relasi manusia dengan penemuan arkeologi yang berasal dari masa silam. Metode investigasi Nicole Hewitt yang ditampilkan sangat sulit untuk dimengerti, terutama jika melihat hal ini hanya terfokus pada narasi yang dibangun. Saya sendiri merasa asing ketika menonton filem ini, banyak hal yang saya tidak ketahui, sehingga membuat terjebak dalam visual dan narasi yang dibangun.<\/span><\/p>\n

Semakin saya fokus pada filem justru semakin mengantuk, agar bisa tetap fokus pada layar, saya terus mencubit tangan. Saya melihat banyak sekali gambar yang ditumpuk\u2013tumpuk dalam satu bingkai. Suatu pengalaman baru bagi saya dalam menonton, melihat gambar di satu bingkai tetapi dengan banyak gambar sekaligus. Setelah menonton filem ini banyak sekali pertanyaan di kepala sehingga saya bertanya kepada kurator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ternyata Luthfan juga memiliki pengalaman yang \u201casing\u201d saat pertama kali menonton <\/span>Women Minor Speculation<\/span><\/i>. Ia\u00a0 mengatakan, \u201csaat pertama kali aku menonton filem ini juga aku gak mengerti, tapi aku terus berupaya membedah filem ini.\u201d Setelah mengobrol dengan Luthfan, saya mengerti banyak hal dengan modal memori visual yang terekam di kepala. Filem ini tidak hanya mengungkap arkeologi sebagai artefak masa lalu, tetapi bisa membicarakan persoalan jaman sekarang terkait dengan kultur komputer dengan data-data yang sering kali dihapus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gambar yang ditumpuk-tumpuk dalam satu bingkai memberikan kesan yang rumit karena tak hanya bicara tentang masa lalu atau masa sekarang, tetapi juga bagaimana melihat ini sebagai objek yang berharga. Ini juga mengingatkan saya dengan filem-filem otobiografi yang berhubungan dengan memori dan temporalitas. Luthfan mengatakan, \u201csebenarnya misi dalam filem ini menurut aku adalah membawa sejarah itu tidak didewakan, tetapi dia harus cair di masa sekarang dan juga masa depan\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem kedua yang diputar berjudul <\/span>Chronicles of That Time <\/span><\/i>disutradarai oleh <\/span>Maria Iorio<\/b> asal Switzerland dan <\/span>Rapha\u00ebl Cuomo <\/b>asal Italia. Filem ini menampilkan hasil rekaman mini DV dan narasi yang dikonstruksi berulang-ulang seakan ada penegasan atau konflik yang ingin disampaikan, seperti antar lintas tempat, memori, dan cara hidup. Di awal filem terdengar percakapan antara pembuat filem Eropa dengan seorang Tunisia diiringi tampilan rekaman yang rusak. Filem ini sering sekali menampilkan gambar yang diulang, kalau di akhir filem tidak menampilkan rentetan waktu, mungkin akan tertipu dan tidak sadar bahwa filem ini mencoba melihat jarak interval dari saat pertama kali dibuat tahun 2004 sampai 2011, dan kemudian kaset tersebut disunting kembali sekarang. Seakan saya diajak jalan-jalan melihat masa dulu, masa filem dibuat dan dihubungkan dengan masa sekarang.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Luthfan Nur Rochman mengatakan alasan memilih judul kuratorial Batas Air karena merasa laut itu milik bersama dan memiliki sejarah yang lebih lama dari pada hari ini yang penuh birokrasi. Luthfan memberikan gambaran yang terjadi tentang sungai dan laut yang merupakan awal di mana peradaban dimulai, ketika munculnya perdagangan.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1669554458344-837c8030-4bc7″][vc_column_text title=”The International Competition 07: Seeing And Hearing” css=”.vc_custom_1669554608066{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On Monday 27 November 2022, the International Competition 07: Water Margins program was presented at the Forum Lenteng Cinema. ARKIPEL Catch-22 – 9th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival has been held for two days. The program, which is curated by <\/span>Luthfan Nur Rochman<\/b>, features <\/span>Chronicles of That Time<\/span><\/i> (2021) and <\/span>Women Minor Speculation<\/span><\/i> (2021). Both films present a story of a journey through time and place that moves forward in a long journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women Minor Speculation<\/span><\/i> is directed by Nicole Hewitt from Croatia. This film attempts to portray human relations with archaeological discoveries from the past. Nicole Hewitt’s investigative method that is shown is very difficult to understand, especially if you see this only focuses on the narrative being built. I myself feel foreign when watching this film, there are many things I don’t know, so it makes me feel trapped in the visuals and narrative that are built.<\/span><\/p>\n

The more I focused on the film, the more sleepy I got. In order to stay focused on the screen, I kept pinching my hands. I saw a lot of pictures piled up in one frame. It’s a new experience for me, seeing an image in one frame but with many images at once. After watching this film, there were lots of questions in my head, so I asked the curator.<\/span><\/p>\n

It turned out that Luthfan also had a \u201cforeign\u201d experience the first time he watched <\/span>Women Minor Speculation<\/span><\/i>. He said, “The first time I watched this film, I also didn’t understand, but I kept trying to dissect this film.” After chatting with Luthfan, I understand a lot of things with the visual memory recorded in my head. This film does not only reveal archeology as an artifact of the past, but can talk about today’s problems related to computer culture with data that is often deleted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These images that are stacked in one frame give the impression of a complicated interpretation because they do not only talk about the past or present, but also how we see this as a valuable object.\u00a0 It also reminds me of autobiographical films related to memory and temporality.\u00a0 Luthfan said “Actually the objective in this film in my opinion is to bring history not to be deified, but it must be fluid in the present, and also in the future”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second film to be screened, entitled <\/span>Chronicles of That Time<\/span><\/i>, was directed by Maria Iorio from Switzerland and Rapha\u00ebl Cuomo from Italy. This film features mini-DV recordings and narratives that are constructed repeatedly as if there is an emphasis or conflict to be conveyed, such as crossing places, memories, and ways of life. At the beginning of the film, a conversation between a European filmmaker and a Tunisian is heard, accompanied by a display of damaged footage. This film often shows repeated images, if at the end of the film it doesn’t show a time series, you might be tricked and don’t realize that this film is trying to see the interval from when it was first made in 2004 to 2011, and then the tape is being edited again now. It’s as if I’m being taken on a trip to see the past, the time when films were made and connected to the present.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Luthfan Nur Rochman said the reason for choosing the curatorial title Water Margins was because he felt that the sea belonged together and had a longer history than today, which was full of bureaucracy.
