Kuratorial ini berusaha untuk memeriksa kemanusiaan atau \u201ckita\u201d dalam dunia modern dengan pendekatan ilmu pengetahuan modern. Penayangan film ini dibuka oleh salah satu kurator ARKIPEL <\/span>Luthfan Nur Rochman<\/b> mewakili Hafiz yang berhalangan hadir. Penayangan ini menampilkan dua filem yaitu <\/span>By The Throat <\/span><\/i>(2021) yang diproduksi di Belgia oleh sutradara <\/span>Amir Borenstein<\/b> dan <\/span>Minimal Sway While Starting My Way Up <\/span><\/i>(2021) yang diproduksi di Prancis dan Finlandia oleh sutradara <\/span>St\u00e9phanie Lagarde<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem <\/span>By The Throat <\/span><\/i>merupakan sebuah filem yang menurut saya memiliki pendekatan yang unik dalam melihat konflik sosial dan politik di dunia dengan menggunakan pintu masuk dari biologi dan linguistik. Di awal film kita diperlihatkan visual dari berbagai sosok yang sedang berujar kata-kata dan representasi fonetik visual dari suara yang keluar dari mulut mereka, layaknya sebuah tulisan esai yang sedang menjelaskan konsep paling umum kepada pembaca sebelum masuk ke dalam permasalahan. Layar menjadi gelap terdengar suara seseorang yang seperti sedang berceramah menceritakan tentang kisah peperangan suatu kaum di masa lalu dimana fonetik suatu kata, \u2018<\/span>shibboleth\u2019, <\/span><\/i>menjadi penentu antara hidup dan mati<\/span><\/p>\n

Di sebuah ruangan yang mirip dengan ruang dokter sebuah sepasang tangan sedang mengaplikasikan gel pada mesin USG. Seorang pria yang berasal dari Iraq menempelkan mesin USG tersebut dan menceritakan konflik sektarian dimana ujaran fonetik satu kata, \u2018<\/span>Al Aziz\u2019 <\/span><\/i>dan \u2018<\/span>El-Eziz\u2019<\/span><\/i>, kembali menjadi penentu hidup dan mati, kebebasan dan diskriminasi. Di adegan lain seorang calon pengungsi dari Tibet menceritakan tentang permohonan suaka yang ditolak karena dialek fonetik yang ia gunakan dianggap tidak sesuai dengan lokasi kelahirannya oleh lembaga suaka, atau seorang perempuan Albania yang harus menghilangkan identitas bahasa dan budayanya sebagai Albania untuk mengakomodir kedangkalan pengetahuan Eropa tentang persebaran dialek di dunia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem ini memunculkan pertanyaan problematika baru relasi antara pengetahuan modern dengan identitas budaya individu. Perkembangan ilmu linguistik dan peralatan modern untuk memproses suara justru menjadi sebuah bentuk baru dari dehumanisasi budaya yang \u201cLain\u201d dengan mereduksinya menjadi kumpulan suara yang ditentukan secara arbitrer oleh sekumpulan ahli bahasa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem kedua adalah <\/span>Minimal Sway While Starting My Way Up <\/span><\/i>oleh sutradara St\u00e9phanie Lagarde. Dalam filem yang berdurasi 15 menit ini, Lagarde mampu memperlihatkan posisi manusia dalam dunia modern dengan menggunakan titik masuk yang tidak terduga, sebuah elevator. Elevator ini membawa kita ke atas menuju lantai tertinggi dari apartemen-apartemen yang mewah. Material-material yang digunakan untuk membangun ruangan tersebut menjadi penanda kelas dan eksklusivitas penghuninya, seperti marmer yang menjadi bahan baku untuk wastafel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elevator membawa kita ke bawah menuju titik terdalam sebuah tambang di Afrika Selatan di mana cahaya matahari tidak mampu menembus lapisan bumi. Satu-satunya sumber cahaya adalah lampu remang-remang. Dari sebuah tanda status kekayaan kini elevator membawa kita ke dalam bentuk baru kolonialisme dimana perusahaan tambang asing menguras kekayaan sumber daya alam suatu negara untuk membangun kekayaan orang-orang kaya di negara lain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Menurut Jason<\/strong>, salah satu penonton dan juga salah satu reporter ARKIPEL, filem pertama lebih mudah untuk ditangkap karena memiliki kedekatan dengan minatnya, linguistik. Namun dia tidak bisa terlalu menangkap filem kedua karena konsep yang dibahas, arsitektur, masih asing baginya.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kedua filem ini menunjukkan bahwa di masa modern kita adalah suara, otot mulut dan tenggorokan, apartemen yang tinggi menjulang, dan tambang yang terdalam. Sosok kita menjadi rumit, ambigu, penuh dengan tanda-tanda yang seakan tidak berhubungan namun tetap berhubungan. Seperti tajuk kuratorial kedua filem ini \u201ckita\u201d yang sepertinya sederhana menjadi rumit ketika dilihat dari pengetahuan dunia modern.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1669636311113-5abf088f-3909″][vc_column_text title=”International Competition 05: Who are \u201cWe\u201d in Front of Modernity?” css=”.vc_custom_1669637405089{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On 27 September at 13.00, ARKIPEL film festival screened two films that are curated by Hafiz Rancajale<\/strong> with the curatorial title <\/span>Examining the Seemingly Simple \u201cWe\u201d<\/span><\/i>. This curatorial tries to examine our humanity or \u201cUs\u201d in the modern world with the approach of modern science. The screening is opened by one of ARKIPEL curators Luthfan Nur Rochman<\/strong>, representing Hafiz who unfortunately cannot come. This screening shows two films <\/span>By The Throat <\/span><\/i>(2021) produced in Belgium by director Amir Borenstein<\/strong> and <\/span>Minimal Sway While Starting My Way Up <\/span><\/i>(2021) produced in France and Finland by director St\u00e9phanie Lagarde<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

For me, <\/span>By The Throat<\/span><\/i> had a unique approach to examining social and political conflicts in the modern world using biology and linguistics as an entry point. At the beginning of the film, we are shown a visual where some people try to pronounce words and their phonetic visual representation, like an essay that explains the general concept before entering the problem. The screen turned black and we can hear the sound of a man telling the story of a war between two nations in the past where the phonetic of a word, \u2018<\/span>shibboleth<\/span><\/i>\u2019, became a determinant between life and death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a room resembling a doctor\u2019s office, a pair of hands is applying gel to the ultrasound machine. A man from Iraq put the machine in his throat and tells the story of sectarian conflict where again the phonetic of a word, <\/span>\u2018Al-Aziz\u2019<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>\u2018El-Eziz\u2019<\/span><\/i>, became a determinant for life and death. In another scene, a rejected asylum candidate from Tibet tells the story of his rejected asylum application when his phonetic dialect is considered not in accordance with his birthplace by the government asylum institution. Or an Albanian woman who had to erase her own cultural and linguistic identity as Albanian to accommodate the shallowness of European knowledge on the global spread of language dialectics.<\/span><\/p>\n

This film also brings up a new problem in relation between modern science and individual cultural identity. Instead, the development of linguistics and modern equipment became a new form to dehumanize the \u201cOther\u201d culture by reducing it into a bunch of sounds that were arbitrarily decided by a group of language experts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second film is <\/span>Minimal Sway While Starting My Way Up <\/span><\/i>by director St\u00e9phanie Lagarde. In this 15-minute film, Lagarde shows the human position in the modern world with an unexpected entry point, an elevator. It takes us above to the penthouse of a luxury apartment. Materials used to build the place signifies the class and exclusivity of the people who inhabit the place, such as marble sinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The elevator also takes us to the deepest level of a mine in South Africa where the sunlight cannot penetrate the thickness of the earth layer. The only light source is a dim light. From a symbol of richness, now the lift takes us to a new form of colonialism where mining companies plundered the natural resources of a country to profit the rich in another country.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Jason<\/strong>, one of the audience in the film screening and also one of the ARKIPEL reporters, the first film is easier for him to understand because it is related to his passion, linguistics. But he can\u2019t quite get the second film because the concept discussed, architecture, is still foreign to him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These two films show that in the modern era we are sound, the muscle of the mouth and throat, high rise apartment, and the deepest mine. Our selves became more complex and ambiguous, full of signs that were seemingly not related but very related to each other.
