Program Kompetisi Internasional 01:<\/span> Materialitas Gambar: Ekstrapolasi Dunia Sebelum dan Sesudah Manusia <\/span><\/i>dipresentasikan di bioskop forlen pada pukul 13.00. Program yang dikuratori oleh <\/span>I Gde Mika<\/b> ini menayangkan 5 filem, berjudul <\/span>The Efficiency Exhibition<\/span><\/i> (2022), <\/span>Mova oborony<\/span><\/i> (2021), <\/span>The Deep <\/span><\/i>(2022) dan <\/span>Parasite Family<\/span><\/i> (2022), yang dihadiri 10 orang.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kelima filem tersebut melakukan eksplorasi gambar, menelusuri perjalanan karya seni dari bentuk material menjadi immaterial atau digital. Namun setelah memasuki tahap teknologi digital, banyak potongan-potongan gambar dibentuk secara eksperimental, terkadang menjadi abstrak. Peristiwa-peristiwa di dunia nyata pun turut direkayasa oleh teknologi ini, sehingga menimbulkan kesan ambigu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem pertama berjudul <\/span>Mova oborony<\/span><\/i> (2021) karya <\/span>Oleksandr Isaienko<\/b>, produksi dari Ukraina. Filem eksperimental ini sangat menarik. Di awal filem, seorang pria tanpa identitas di tengah gurun menampilkan gerakan tubuh sesuai dengan ritme suara. Posisi bingkai lebih banyak diam, menampilkan image seperti bidang dua dimensi. Dalam bingkai, kita melihat orang yang berjalan dari arah kanan ke kiri, lalu sosok tersebut muncul kembali dari arah yang sama. Tubuh pria ini nampak transparan di beberapa titik yang selalu berbeda di setiap kemunculannya. Ini menimbulkan pengalaman baru bagi saya, bagaimana saya tidak lagi mengenali objek maupun latar belakang pada gambar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem kedua berjudul <\/span>Parasite Family<\/span><\/i> (2022) karya <\/span>Prapat Jiwarangsan<\/b>, produksi dari Thailand. Filem ini memanfaatkan negatif film menjadi bentuk yang baru melalui manipulasi digital. Wajah-wajah dalam negatif film tersebut menjadi wajah abstrak dan menunjukan sosok yang mengerikan. Pecahan gambar yang membentuk kolase di awal filem ini mengingatkan saya dengan kumpulan pecahan cermin kecil yang membentuk keseluruhan wajah. Hal ini menimbulkan efek ilusi yang membentuk distorsi gambar, di sinilah muncul adanya ambiguitas pada gambar, tentang perspektif yang terpecah-pecah dan tidak parsial. Kita menyaksikan visual perubahan wajah yang berubah-ubah dalam menampilkan parasit masyarakat Thailand yang menyerap kekayaan dan kekuasaan. Filem ini menampilkan hubungan antara sejarah, ingatan, dan politik di Thailand. Saat menonton di pertengahan filem, mata saya mulai merasa sakit, karena setiap montase menampilkan banyak warna yang berubah-ubah dan mencolok, serta pergantian frame yang sangat cepat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem ketiga berjudul <\/span>The Film Factory<\/span><\/i> (2022) karya <\/span>Silvestar Kolbas<\/b>,<\/span> produksi dari Kroasia. Filem esai tentang fotografi ini berangkat dari perjalanan waktu melalui penuaan materi fotografi itu sendiri. Arsip yang diambil di pabrik fotokemika yang terbengkalai dan kosong, diambil secara eksklusif pada bahan fotografi yang pernah diproduksi di pabrik itu. Filem ini menampilkan perubahan industri fotografi saat itu dengan menampilkan suara para pekerja yang berbicara tentang konsekuensi negatif dari perubahan tersebut, hingga pabrik itu tutup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem keempat berjudul <\/span>The Deep<\/span><\/i> (2022) karya <\/span>Gavin Hipkins<\/b>,<\/span> produksi dari New Zealand. Filem ini menarik secara visual, karena beberapa gambar yang ditampilkan dengan lapisan warna yang berbeda-beda ini membuat saya mengingat proses pemisahan warna (RGB) dalam gambar secara digital. Setelah itu, muncul efek <\/span>grain<\/span><\/i> pada gambar gedung-gedung dan gelombang laut. Menariknya visual-visual tersebut diiringi oleh narasi yang dibacakan dengan pelafalan yang tidak biasa. Hal ini membuat saya tidak mengerti narasi dan visual film ini, karena keduanya sangat kontradiktif.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem kelima berjudul <\/span>The Efficiency Exhibition<\/span><\/i> karya <\/span>Di Hu,<\/b> produksi dari Irlandia. Filem esai ini membedah berbagai perangkat digital teknologi modern, mulai dari kemunculan mekanisme fordisme hingga memasuki teknologi biometrik wajah sebagai alat verifikasi identitas warga. Filem ini memperlihatkan tentang panoptikon sel penjara, di dalamnya ada bentuk menara yang ditempatkan di tengah lingkaran sel penjara. Dari menara, seseorang yang berada di bawah dapat diawasi dari atas, tetapi seseorang yang dibawah tidak dapat melakukan sebaliknya. Dari sini, kita melihat hubungan antara mekanisme panoptikon dengan cara kerja teknologi kekuasaan.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1670149021477-7aab7312-d2d4″][vc_column_text title=”International Competition 01: Exploration of Images in Search of Cinema” css=”.vc_custom_1670149153136{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On Monday, 28 November 2022, ARKIPEL Catch-22 – <\/span>9th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival<\/span><\/i> has been going on for 4 days. International Competition 01: <\/span>Materiality of Image: extrapolation of the world before and after humans <\/span><\/i>is presented at bioskopforlen at 1 pm. Curated by <\/span>I Gde Mika<\/b>, this program screened 5 films titled: <\/span>The Efficiency Exhibition<\/span><\/i> (2022), <\/span>Mova Oborony<\/span><\/i> (2021), <\/span>The Deep<\/span><\/i> (2022), and <\/span>Parasite Family<\/span><\/i> (2022). The screening is attended by 10 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

These five films explore images, searching the transformation of artworks from material form to immaterial or digital. But after it entered the digital stage, these cuts of images are shaped experimentally into something more abstract. The events in the real world are also being staged by this technology thus making an impression of ambiguity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first film is <\/span>Mova Oborony <\/span><\/i>(2021) by <\/span>Oleksandr Isaienko<\/b>, produced in Ukraine. This experimental film is very interesting. At the beginning of the film, a man without identity shows body movement that is moving per the rhythmic sound in the middle of the desert.\u00a0 The frame is still, showing the image in something like two-dimensional space. In the frame, we see this man walking from right to left and resurfacing from the same direction. This man\u2019s body is transparent in many parts that are always different every time. This creates a new experience for me because I can no longer identify the object or the background of the image.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second film is <\/span>Parasite Family <\/span><\/i>(2022) by <\/span>Prapat Jiwarangsan<\/b>, produced in Thailand. This film uses film negative to make it into new shapes through digital manipulation. The faces in the film negative become more abstract and increasingly horrifying. We see the visual transformation that exposes Thailand people\u2019s parasites that absorb power and wealth. This film shows the relationship between history, memory, and politics in Thailand. In the middle of the film, my eyes were starting to hurt, because every montage shows changing and jarring colors, and fast-changing frames.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third film, titled <\/span>The Film Factory <\/span><\/i>(2022) by <\/span>Silvestar Kolbas<\/b> was produced in Croatia. This essay film departs from a time travel through the aging photography material. The archive is the celluloid raw material taken from a photochemical factory that is abandoned and empty. This film presents the change in the photography industry at that time by using audio interviews of the former workers about the negative consequences of the change, to the shutdown of the factory at the end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fourth film is titled <\/span>The Deep <\/span><\/i>(2022) by <\/span>Gavin Hipkins<\/b>, produced in New Zealand. This film is visually interesting because some images that are shown have different layers of color which reminds me of the color separation (RGB) process in digital imaging. The grain effect is also shown in the skyrises and ocean waves, interestingly these visuals are accompanied by a narration that is read with uncommon pronunciation. Due to this treatment, I can\u2019t understand the film’s narration and visuals because the two are contradictory to each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fifth film, titled <\/span>The Efficiency Exhibition <\/span><\/i>by <\/span>Di Hu<\/b>, was produced in Ireland. This essay film examines how modern digital technology hardware, from Fordism mechanism to face biometric recognition, can be used as a tool to verify the identity of citizens. This film also shows a prison shaped like a panopticon with a tower situated in the middle of the circle. From the tower, someone can watch the people on the ground though the people on the ground cannot do the same.
