Sesi kedua dimulai pada pukul 16.00 WIB sore dengan kuratorial yang berjudul <\/span>Konfigurasi Ulang Pengalaman Modernitas<\/span><\/i>. Dalam kuratorial ini, <\/span>Akbar Yumni<\/b>, selaku kurator, telah memilih film berjudul “\u5973\u5fb7 (<\/span>Old Fashion, New Life<\/span><\/i>)” karya sutradara <\/span>Lam Can-zhao<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem dokumenter yang memiliki durasi sekitar dua setengah jam ini mengikuti kisah dua perempuan dengan pandangan hidup yang sangat berbeda. <\/span>Zhang Xue<\/b>, seorang pensiunan yang saat ini menjadi guru moral bagi perempuan, mendorong mereka untuk mengikuti norma tradisional Tiongkok yang mengharuskan patuh terhadap suami serta menekankan ketidakperluan untuk bersikap independen atau terpengaruh oleh budaya feminisme Barat. Di sisi lain, <\/span>Li Ying<\/b> adalah seorang seniman yang pernah belajar di Perancis, perempuan yang menolak terikat oleh ekspektasi gender di negaranya dan berharap untuk menemukan pasangan yang memiliki pandangan serupa dengannya.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perbedaan yang mencolok adalah pandangan mereka tentang tradisi. Zhang Xue meyakini bahwa tradisi adalah kunci kebahagiaan dan kemakmuran, sementara bagi Li Ying, kemandirian adalah hal yang tak tergantikan dan tak bisa digugat, bahkan oleh masyarakat dan pemerintah yang mendorong kolektivisme dalam bermasyarakat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kamera yang digunakan oleh Can-zhao mampu menangkap momen-momen intim dalam kehidupan kedua subjek ini, mulai dari kencan di rumah Li Ying dengan pacarnya hingga pemakaman ayah mertua Zhang Xue. Kamera tersebut berhasil menggambarkan keintiman dengan menghadirkan momen-momen yang sangat pribadi, kadang-kadang seolah menjadi pengamat tak terlihat, dan kadang-kadang menjadi bagian aktif dari situasi tersebut.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kejujuran emosi subjek terhadap kamera adalah ciri khas filem ini. Terutama dalam adegan di mana anak tiri Zhang Xue dan sepupunya berada dalam kabin komedi putar, mereka berbagi kenangan masa kecil sambil membandingkan hidup mereka sekarang dengan masa lalu. Ketika sepupunya mengumumkan bahwa dia telah menikah, reaksi emosionalnya terekspresikan dengan jelas tanpa perlu kata-kata tambahan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kedua subjek ini mencerminkan ambiguitas ideologi dalam masyarakat dan pemerintah Tiongkok, yang di satu sisi mengangkat Mao sebagai pemimpin yang hampir diberi status dewa, tetapi di sisi lain, masih mempromosikan ajaran-ajaran kuno yang pernah dipersekusi oleh Mao sendiri, dianggap sebagai warisan buruk zaman feodalisme yang harus dihapuskan oleh komunis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Salah satu contoh ironisnya adalah ketika peserta kelas Zhang Xue menyanyikan lagu kebangsaan sambil mengenakan pakaian yang mencerminkan cita-cita Mao, namun sebenarnya menuju ke arah yang sebaliknya, mendukung nilai-nilai feodal yang dulu dikutuk oleh komunis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dalam kuratorinya, Akbar Yumni fokus pada isu-isu modernitas yang terungkap dalam filem ini. Filem ini menghadirkan solusi-solusi reaksioner yang diajukan oleh Zhang Xue sebagai upaya untuk merespons masalah alienasi dalam konteks modernitas Tiongkok, seperti yang dialami oleh Li Ying. Namun, yang lebih menarik adalah filem ini menekankan keambiguan ideologis dalam konsep modernitas itu sendiri, di mana performativitas berusaha menggantikan idealisme yang banal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zhang Xue dan Li Ying, dalam segala perbedaannya, adalah produk dari kebingungan konsep modernitas yang menempatkan performativitas di atas idealisme dalam upaya untuk memberikan rasionalitas pada dunia yang semakin tidak rasional. Mereka adalah dua sisi dari koin yang sama, merepresentasikan perdebatan yang dalam dan rumit tentang arah yang diambil oleh masyarakat dan pemerintah Tiongkok dalam menjalani era modern.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1672356843702-2655322e-0974″][vc_column_text title=”International Competition 01: Constructing a Modern Identity” css=”.vc_custom_1695749829277{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On Monday, September 25, 2023, ARKIPEL <\/span>Noli Me Tangere – 10th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival<\/span><\/i> presents screenings of films participating in the international competition. The second session began at 4pm with a curatorial entitled <\/span>Reconfiguring the Experience of Modernity<\/span><\/i>. In this curatorial, <\/span>Akbar Yumni<\/b>, as the curator, has chosen a film entitled \u5973\u5fb7 (<\/span>Old Fashion, New Life<\/span><\/i>) by director <\/span>Lam Can-zhao<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two-and-a-half-hour documentary follows two women with very different worldviews. <\/span>Zhang Xue<\/b>, a retiree who is now a moral teacher for women, encourages them to follow traditional Chinese norms that require obedience to husbands and emphasizes the unnecessary need to be independent or influenced by Western feminist culture. <\/span>Li Ying<\/b>, on the other hand, is an artist who studied in France, a woman who refuses to be bound by her country’s gender expectations and hopes to find a partner who shares her views.<\/span><\/p>\n

The significant difference is their view on tradition. Zhang Xue believes that tradition is the key to happiness and prosperity, while for Li Ying, self-reliance is irreplaceable and cannot be questioned, even by a society and government that encourages collectivism in society.<\/span><\/p>\n

The camera used by Can-zhao was able to capture intimate moments in the lives of these two subjects, from a date at Li Ying’s house with her boyfriend to the funeral of Zhang Xue’s father-in-law. The camera managed to portray intimacy by presenting very personal moments, sometimes as an unseen observer, and sometimes as an active part of the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The emotional honesty of the subjects towards the camera is the highlight of the film. Especially in the scene where stepdaughter Zhang Xue and her cousin are in a merry-go-round cabin, they share childhood memories while comparing their present life with the past. When her cousin announces that she has gotten married, her emotional reaction is clearly expressed without the need for additional words.<\/span><\/p>\n

These two subjects reflect the ambiguity of ideology in Chinese society and government, which on the one hand elevates Mao as a leader who is almost given the status of a god, but on the other hand, still promotes the ancient teachings that Mao was once persecuted for, considered a bad legacy of feudalism that the communists should abolish.<\/span><\/p>\n

One ironic example is when Zhang Xue’s class sang the national anthem while wearing clothes that reflected Mao’s ideals, but actually went in the opposite direction, supporting the feudal values once condemned by communists.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his curation, Akbar Yumni focuses on the issues of modernity revealed in the film. The film presents reactionary solutions proposed by Zhang Xue as an attempt to respond to the problem of alienation in the context of Chinese modernity, as experienced by Li Ying. However, what is more interesting is that the film emphasizes the ideological ambiguity in the concept of modernity itself, where performativity attempts to replace banal idealism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zhang Xue and Li Ying, for all their differences, are products of a confused concept of modernity that places performativity above idealism in an attempt to give rationality to an increasingly irrational world.
