Seperti halnya tema kuratorial, kursi-kursi di ruang tersebut terisi penuh dengan para penonton yang antusias untuk menonton <\/span>Ghost Light<\/span><\/i> (2021) arahan <\/span>Timoteus Anggawan Kusno, <\/b>Horror Vacui<\/span><\/i> (2023)<\/span> karya<\/span> Boris Poljak<\/b>, dan <\/span>R21 aka Restoring Solidarity <\/span><\/i>(2022) mi<\/span>lik <\/span>Mohanad Yaqoubi. <\/b>Membuka sesi tersebut, <\/span>Luthfan Nur Rochman<\/b> sebagai salah satu tim selektor menyebutkan beberapa catatan kuratorial yang ditulis oleh <\/span>Akbar Yumni<\/b> terkait performativitas yang bisa dilihat di dalam ketiga filem. Filem dari Indonesia, <\/span>Ghost Light<\/span><\/i> dengan terang benderang memperlihatkan performans gerak tubuh dan suara, filem asal Kroasia, <\/span>Horror Vacui<\/span><\/i> menunjukkan kesadaran dan kesengajaan tindakan simbolis di depan umum, sementara kolaborasi produksi Belgia, Qatar, dan Palestina yang menghasilkan <\/span>R21 aka Restoring Solidarity<\/span><\/i> merupakan aksi pembacaan arsip-arsip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dalam catatan kuratorialnya, Akbar Yumni juga mengibaratkan filem sebagai kanvas yang bisa diisi oleh elemen artistik seni apapun. Maka bagi <\/span>Ghost Light, <\/span><\/i>selain mengisi ruang putih tersebut dengan seni performans, juga berupaya bereksperimentasi dengan membangun garis vertikal yang memisahkan elemen gerak para performer di sebelah kanan dengan elemen suara di bagian kiri. Menonton filem ini seperti belajar hal teknis dalam proses mengarahkan suara yang bisa memperkaya pengalaman visual. Walaupun dituntut untuk menyaksikan filem ini secara seimbang antara dua sisi, perhatian penonton sesekali bisa saja terbagi antara memperhatikan dua orang yang menyiratkan aksi baris-berbaris dan opresi dengan tiga orang yang mencoba memenuhi ruang kosong dengan berbagai suara. Barangkali untuk mendapatkan pengalaman menyeluruh dari filem ini perlu menontonnya lebih dari sekali.<\/span><\/p>\n

Da<\/span>lam <\/span>Horror Vacui<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> Boris Poljak mengawa<\/span>li guratan di atas kanvas dengan garis horizontal imajiner yang nampak membagi lanskap ke dalam dua bagian. Pada pembuka filem, kita mendapati riak air laut yang cukup tenang di bagian bawah, sementara bagian atas yang dibagi oleh garis horizontal adalah pantulan yang menyiratkan panasnya hari itu. Adegan beralih pada sebuah kapal militer yang bergerak perlahan. Kita pun menyaksikan bagian atas kapal yang hampir tidak memiliki ruang kosong karena diisi oleh pesawat-pesawat tempur dengan suara khasnya. Sementara bagian bawah dipenuhi dengan bagan kapal yang di dalamnya mungkin ada ruang-ruang pribadi para tentara. Di adegan-adegan selanjutnya, filem ini menunjukkan sebuah parade yang <\/span>membentuk militerisasi lanskap dan militerisasi sosial.<\/span><\/p>\n

Da<\/span>lam filem <\/span>R21 aka Restoring Solidarity<\/span><\/i> kita tidak menemukan garis pemisah yang ajek seperti ha<\/span>lnya di dua filem sebelumnya, melainkan garis-garis yang tidak beraturan yang mencerminkan ketidakpastian nasib orang-orang di wilayah konflik. Kadang kita menemukan garis-garis imajiner yang horizontal pada tanah, vertikal pada gedung-gedung yang masih berdiri, diagonal pada senjata-senjata yang dibawa militer, hingga garis-garis biomorfis pada arsip-arsip filem dan mayat-mayat. Filem berbahasa Jepang dengan durasi tujuh puluh menit ini menampilkan material arsip tentang Palestina pada rentang periode 1960-an hingga 80-an. Pembacaan ulang Palestina ini membawa kita pada antologi kisah-kisah kompleks yang disajikan dari perspektif para aktivis Jepang. Banyak hal yang barangkali tidak bisa kita temukan di banyak tayangan televisi masa lalu dan bisa kita temukan di filem ini, termasuk arsip filem yang dibuat oleh PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization).<\/span><\/p>\n

Setelah acara pemutaran selesai, garis-garis yang mengisi kanvas ketiga filem tersebut tidak lantas putus. Ia menjalar keluar layar dan menemukan ruang-ruang putih pada diri kita, entah disambungkan pada masa lalu, masa kini, atau mungkin memanjang hingga masa yang akan datang.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1672356843702-2655322e-0974″][vc_column_text title=”International Competition 10: Lines Drawn on A Canvas” css=”.vc_custom_1695751191713{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The films included in the International Competition 10 entitled <\/span>Empty Space and Fullness<\/span><\/i> were first screened at Bioskopforlen on September 25, 2023 at 7.30pm. As with the curatorial theme, the seats were full of enthusiastic audience eager to watch <\/span>Timoteus Anggawan Kusno<\/b>‘s <\/span>Ghost Light<\/span><\/i> (2021), <\/span>Boris Poljak<\/b>‘s <\/span>Horror Vacui<\/span><\/i> (2023), and Mohanad <\/span>Yaqoubi<\/b>‘s <\/span>R21 aka Restoring Solidarity<\/span><\/i> (2022). Opening the session, <\/span>Luthfan Nur Rochman<\/b> as one of the selector team mentioned some curatorial notes written by <\/span>Akbar Yumni<\/b> regarding the performativity that can be seen in the three films. The Indonesian film, <\/span>Ghost Light<\/span><\/i> brightly shows the performance of movements and sounds, the Croatian film, <\/span>Horror Vacui<\/span><\/i> shows the awareness of symbolic actions in public, while the collaboration of Belgium, Qatar and Palestine that produced <\/span>R21 aka Restoring Solidarity<\/span><\/i> is an act of reading archives.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his curatorial, Akbar Yumni also analogizes film as a canvas that can be drawn with any artistic element. Thus for <\/span>Ghost Light<\/span><\/i>, in addition to completing the white space with performance art, it also tries to experiment by building a vertical line that separates the performers\u2019 movements on the right and the sound element on the left. Watching this film is a moment of technical learning in the process of directing sound that can enrich the visual experience. Although it is required to watch the film in a balanced way between the two sides, the audience’s attention can occasionally be divided between two people implying the action of army marching and oppression and three people trying to fill the empty space with various sounds. Perhaps to get the full experience of this film we need to watch it more than once.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Horror Vacui<\/span><\/i>, Boris Poljak begins his strokes on the canvas with an imaginary horizontal line that seems to divide the landscape into two parts. In the opening of the film, we see the calm ripples of the sea at the bottom, while the upper part divided by the horizontal line is a reflection that implies the heat of the day. The scene switches to a military ship moving slowly. We see the upper part of the ship, which has almost no empty space because it is full of military aircrafts with their distinctive sounds. While the lower part is the ship’s body in which there may be private rooms for the soldiers. In later scenes, the film shows a parade that militarizes the landscape, as well as militarizes the social.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the <\/span>R21 aka Restoring Solidarity<\/span><\/i>, we do not find a steady dividing line as it appears in the previous two films, yet random lines that reflect the uncertainty of the fate of people in the conflict area. Sometimes we find imaginary lines that are horizontal on the ground, vertical on buildings that are still standing, diagonal on weapons carried by the military, to biomorphic lines on film archives and dead bodies. This seventy-minute Japanese-language film features archival material about Palestine from the 1960s to the 80s. This re-reading of Palestine brings us to an anthology of complex stories presented from the perspective of Japanese activists. There are many things that we may not be able to find in the television news in the past that we can find in this film, including archival films made by the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization).<\/span><\/p>\n

After the screening, the lines drawn on the canvas of those films are not simply disconnected.
