I: Ininnawa and the Marginalized Islands” css=”.vc_custom_1696149134627{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Through the curated theme Mapping the Grid, the ARKIPEL Noli Me Tangere Film Festival – 10th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival is screening one film on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 19.00 WIB. Dini Adanani, as a curator, opened the session by stating that the film to be screened, Ininnawa: An Island Calling (2023), is one of the films included in the Candrawala program initiated by Forum Lenteng. She added, Ininnawa tries to capture how the subject intersects with the socio-political layers of its surroundings. According to Dini, the lens in this film has become sharper in highlighting the subject’s problems through simple scenes.

Ininnawa: An Island Calling is a film directed by Arfan Sabran and released in 2023. This film won the Citra Award at the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) in 2022. In an interview published in national media, Arfan said, Ininnawa is taken from the Bugis language which means sincerity to do good things. This film opens by showing the beauty of remote islands in Makassar using bird view, then the camera starts to focus on the main character of this film, Rabiah, as a health worker who serves the community on remote islands in Makassar. Arfan has known and built a relationship with Rabiah and her family for 15 years.

At the beginning of the film, Arfan, through Ininnawa, tries to explain through an observational approach the daily life of Rabiah as the only health worker who has to move from island to island to examine patients because of the lack of health workers on those remote islands. She also has to stay on an island for a long period of time to take care of her patients. After the audience follows Rabiah in her daily life, in the middle of the film, Arfan begins to talk about another character, Mimi, as Rabiah’s daughter who sometimes helps Rabiah to examine patients. Unlike mothers and daughter in general, Arfan reveals the relationship between mother and child in short scenes between Rabiah and Mimi, which is then reinforced by the interview he conducted with Mimi.

Arfan inserts a handful of silly and sarcastic conversations in several scenes. Towards the end of the film, Ininnawa explains the situation in which Covid-19 pandemic began to spread and how the people on the islands reacted. Arfan poked a bit at the government regarding policies that were not relevant for remote communities regarding Covid-19 pandemic and how this had an impact on Rabiah and Mimi’s work as health workers.

The film closes with an emotional scene between Rabiah and Mimi, where Mimi finally realizes that she will continue her mother’s work to serve the community on remote islands in Makassar.

Some of the shots in this film are quite diverse, Arfan often highlights the characters using eye level during interview sessions. There was also a head-conversation voiced by Arfan. The visuals from Ininnawa are also quite pleasing to the eye, the audience can see the beauty of the sea and sunset through the right proportions. The narrative constructed by Arfan is also quite clear; he wants to show and criticize the government about how areas are far from the capital city, do not have enough health workers and have minimal infrastructure. Through Rabiah, Mimi, and the life that moves around them, Arfan wants to emphasize that the inequality that occurs in Indonesia has never changed over time, so that what can be done is to benefit the people around them without placing expectations on anyone.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”12252″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
