Lama-kelamaan mereka menetap dan mengakar, menjadi bagian dari lokasi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Berbagai tingkat dampak polusi alam – udara, cahaya, air, suara, tanah, dapat dilihat hanya dari keluar rumah di Jakarta. Kini ada bentuk polusi lain yang dampaknya pada otak dan perilaku kita yaitu polusi informasi dari algoritma, iklan, <\/span>bots<\/span><\/i>, atau berita palsu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beginilah tipikal kehidupan aku di kota: tidak bisa lepas dari sampah, mau itu sampah fisik atau metafisik.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sampah dan kaitannya dengan konsumsi keseharian merupakan tema besar dalam pemutaran program pertama <\/span>ARKIPEL <\/span>Garden of Earthly<\/span><\/i> Delights \u2013 11<\/span><\/i>th<\/span><\/i> Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hari Minggu (25\/08) siang pada Ulang Tahun aku yang ke-26, aku membeli kopi di kafe berwarna biru dekat Forum Lenteng, sambil menunggu pemutaran <\/span>Kompetisi Internasional 5: <\/span>Memilah yang Berserakan<\/span><\/i>. Seperempat sebelum jam 13.00 WIB aku memulai perjalan ke Bioskop Forlen, tempat pemutaran.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jam 13.10 WIB dan <\/span>Robby Ocktavian<\/b>, selaku kurator maju ke depan ruang pemutaran, menandakan telah dimulainya <\/span>Kompetisi Internasional 5: <\/span>Memilah yang berserakan.<\/span><\/i> Kuratorial Robby membahas bagaimana pemegang kuasa menciptakan ilusi \u201ckebutuhan\u201d bagi para konsumen. Tujuan jangka panjang mereka adalah memastikan orang akan kembali terus dan terus dan terus, sehingga konsumen ketergantungan pada produk mereka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Salah satu dampak dari ketergantungan itu muncul sebagai kehancuran lingkungan pada filem <\/span>Sweet Plastik <\/span><\/i>(2024) karya <\/span>Alfred Banze<\/b>. Nuansa dari filem ini seperti eyang yang sedang berdongeng, komplit dengan nyanyian dan \u201cpanggung\u201d. Sang eyang menceritakan bagaimana plastik pertama datang ke Pulau Breuh dalam bentuk minuman kemasan cerah dan rasa manis yang candu (Dari cara mereka minum, sepertinya seakan mereka memperoleh <\/span>ambrosia<\/span><\/i>). Semua orang di pulau kemudian menjadi ketergantungan pada makanan dalam kemasan, dan wadah plastik dari makanan ini dibuang begitu saja di jalanan. Jelmaan <\/span>monster<\/span><\/i> muncul dari kumpulan plastik dan memakan rumah, pulau, hingga Bumi.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Filem kedua yang diputar merupakan <\/span>Joy<\/span><\/i> (2023) karya <\/span>Ezekiel Morgan. <\/b>Berisi koleksi rekaman dari berbagai siaran langsung, rekaman-rekaman ini memperlihatkan berbagai jenis kegiatan orang-orang lakukan di depan kamera. Seperti berdansa, berolahraga, menyampaikan khotbah, makan, main <\/span>video games<\/span><\/i>, hingga kegiatan-kegiatan yang biasanya dilakukan dibalik pintu tertutup, seperti praktik <\/span>rope bondage <\/span><\/i>atau tidur. Ezekiel menjelaskan bahwa rekaman-rekaman ini diambil dari kanal dengan jumlah penonton yang sedikit, namun mereka tetap mencari secuil interaksi dari orang lain, walaupun sedikit. Apakah orang-orang ini begitu lapar untuk menciptakan hubungan sehingga mereka rela membagikan momen pribadi dengan orang asing demi mendapatkan interaksi?<\/span><\/p>\n

Terakhir adalah filem yang sudah diputar saat malam pembukaan ARKIPEL, yaitu <\/span>Harvesting The Net. A Tale of Digital Gardening <\/span><\/i>(2023)<\/span> oleh <\/span>Alessandro Y. Longo<\/b> dan<\/span> Anna Fasolato<\/b>. Filem ini memetakan kemajuan internet, dari alat yang membuka pintu pengguna untuk bisa berkunjung ke \u201cdunia baru\u201d, yang kemudian membantu mengorganisir unjuk rasa, sampai kini dikontrol oleh perusahaan dengan kepentingan untuk membuat internet sebagai ruang untuk menjual. Oleh karena itu, orang ini mempunyai kepentingan untuk menepis \u201cradikalisme\u201d di ruang daring.<\/span><\/p>\n

Setelah semua diputar, Ezekiel Morgan dipanggil untuk maju ke depan sebagai pembuat filem <\/span>Joy<\/span><\/i> (2023) dan satu-satunya pembuat filem dari program ini yang hadir. Mulailah sesi tanya jawab. Ada pertanyaan mengenai perizinan menggunakan rekaman (Awalnya Ezekiel rajin minta izin, lama-kelamaan dia gunakan saja), ada juga pertanyaan dari <\/span>Phoebe Wong<\/b>, salah satu juri ARKIPEL, yang bertanya apa yang dia maksud dari \u201cmenunjukkan kegagalan\u201d? (Gagal di sini bukan kegagalan pribadi, melainkan kegagalan dalam mengumpulkan audiens atau menciptakan interaksi).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secara dasar, ketiga filem berbicara tentang sampah. Bagaimana ruang lingkup kita telah dicemari oleh berbagai sampah, dalam artian sesuatu yang membawa kerusakan ketimbang pertumbuhan. Membaca lebih dalam lagi, ketiga filem menunjukkan situasi yang sudah berjalan selama puluhan tahun: sebuah kecenderungan bagi orang untuk mengorbankan kesehatan jangka panjang (alam, mental, atau digital) demi merasakan kesenangan jangka pendek.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paru-paru yang rapuh karena udara kotor, penglihatan melemah karena paparan panjang dengan cahaya LED, mikroplastik yang mengalir dalam darah, dan otak yang membusuk berkat media sosial. Pembawaan dari Barat merusak kita sampai ke sel-sel. Ketika kita sadar atas dampaknya, itu sudah mendarah daging di tubuh.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Terlihat suram, tapi ada pula usaha untuk mengambil kendali pada apa yang dicerna. \u201cMemilah yang berserakan\u201d mengacu pada kendali-pilihan. Mulai dari yang sederhana: memilah dan memilih. Perlahan kita bisa lepas dari genggaman kotoran ini.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1672356843702-2655322e-0974″][vc_column_text title=”International Competition 5: Serotonin over Sanity” css=”.vc_custom_1724759217419{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Trash everywhere! On the streets, the park, the beach, the side of the <\/span>warung<\/span><\/i>, along the footbridge of Palmerah Station. Different colors, shapes, and sizes! They have rooted themselves and made a home of the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides environmental pollution – air, light, water, noise, land, can be seen just by going outside. There is another type of pollution we should be wary of, as it impacts our brain chemistry and behavior: Information pollution by algorithms, advertising, bots, or fake news.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reality of living in the city: unable to escape junk; physical or metaphysical.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first screening of <\/span>ARKIPEL <\/span>Garden of Earthly<\/span><\/i> Delights \u2013 11<\/span><\/i>th<\/span><\/i> Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival <\/span><\/i>was about junk and its relation with consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunday (25\/08) afternoon of my 26th Birthday, I was getting coffee at a blue-colored cafe near Forum Lenteng, buying time. A quarter before 1 PM, I made my way to Bioskop Forlen, the screening venue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was 1.30 PM when <\/span>Robby Ocktavian<\/b>, the selector, stood in front of the screening room, the program had begun. International Competition 5: <\/span>Sorting Out the Scattered<\/span><\/i> discusses how stakeholders created the illusion of \u201cneeds\u201d. Their goal is to ensure people return again and again and again, creating a lifestyle dependent on their products.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A depiction of that dependency and its impact was shown through <\/span>Sweet Plastik <\/span><\/i>(2024) by <\/span>Alfred Banze<\/b>. Packaged by an elder telling bedtime stories, it was about how plastic first came to Breuh Island: as a packaged drink, colorful and sweet. How the islanders were consuming it, one might think they acquired <\/span>ambrosia<\/span><\/i>. The residents quickly became addicted, but since there were no trash regulations, the scattered trash manifested itself into a plastic monster consuming houses and their island, before engulfing the Earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joy<\/span><\/i> (2023) by <\/span>Ezekiel Morgan<\/b> was a collection of footage from various live streams, showing what people do in front of the camera. Dancing, exercising, preaching, eating, playing video games, as well as activities that are usually done behind closed doors, such as rope bondage or sleeping. The footage was taken from channels with little to no viewers, by creators who seek acknowledgement despite its small number. It begs the questions: what kind of lifestyle have we created where people are so hungry they are willing to share private moments with online strangers for recognition?<\/span><\/p>\n

Harvesting The Net. A Tale of Digital Gardening <\/span><\/i>(2023)<\/span> by <\/span>Alessandro Y. Longo<\/b> and<\/span> Anna Fasolato<\/b> mapped the progress of the internet, starting out as a doorway to a new world, becoming a tool to organize rallies, and now it\u2019s in the hands of companies wanting the internet as a giant advertising space. Which is why they have an interest in skimming off \u201cradical ideas\u201d to ensure a sanitized online space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the screening was done, there was a Q&A session with Ezekiel Morgan. There was a question about permission in using the footage, Ezekiel explained how he started with asking permissions but would later stop asking. There was also a question by <\/span>Phoebe Wong<\/b>, one of the juries at ARKIPEL, asking what Ezekiel meant by \u201cshowcasing failures?\u201d In which Ezekiel clarified how failures here weren\u2019t referring to the streamers, but rather a failure to gather an audience or create interaction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, the three films are about how our environment has been polluted by wastes, as something destructive rather than constructive. What caused these waste to spread is supported by a trend that has been going on for decades: the tendency for people to sacrifice long-term health (natural, mental, or digital) for short-term pleasures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Weak lungs due to smog, weakened eyesight due to long exposure to LED lights, microplastics flowing in our blood stream, and brain rotting due to social media. How Western \u201cgifts\u201d erodes us down to the cells. Once we’ve noticed the damage, it’s already ingrained in our bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Things might seem dire, but there still should be an attempt to control what we ingest. \u201cSorting out the scattered\u201d refers to control, a choice. Starting from the simple act of sorting and choosing.
