Just a Thing (2024) karya Marc Einsiedel.

Sesi pemutaran ini ditutup dengan filem Just a Thing karya Marc Einsiedel.

The conversation was a snippet of dialogue that, to this day, still echoes vividly in my mind. The brief dialogue seemed to illustrate the fear experienced by the Palestinians and the deep trauma caused by the genocidal atrocities committed by America to them. The fear is so deep that even mentioning the name of an American state is enough to trigger the fear of Jenin residents.

Located at Bioskopforlen, Forum Lenteng, the International Competition 7 screening program was held. The program entitled Gaze and Burden to Bear started at 4pm with a total screening time for three films was 2 hours. This program is part of the International Competition screening series at ARKIPEL Garden of Earthly Delights – 11th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival.

This program highlights prominent sociopolitical issues of our era, focusing on the violence and injustice taking place in different parts of the world, including the ongoing genocide in Palestine. The films screened were Jurgen Ellinghaus‘ Togoland Projections (2023), Chris Giamo‘s Death in Jenin (2024) and Marc Einsiedel‘s Just a Thing (2024). Through the screening of three films that represent the theme, curator Adi Osman brought the audiences into an in-depth exploration of how our views on human suffering are shaped and questioned.

Togoland Projections was the opening film in this program. Jurgen Ellinghaus’ film is a documentary that investigates the history and impact of colonialism in the region of Togoland, now part of Ghana and Togo. It delves into the past through archives, interviews, and reconstructions, offering a critical look at how colonial forces shaped national and social identities in the region.

Shortly before the First World War, director Hans Schomburgk and actress Meg Gehrtson went on a film expedition to West Africa to shoot adventure films in the German colony of Togo. Despite being barely known in Togo, these films became fascinating and disturbing documents, recording the peak of German colonial power in Africa.

More than a century later, Jürgen Ellinghaus set out to rediscover this dark legacy by retracing Schomburgk’s footsteps and showing the films to Togolese audiences for the first time. After the screening, the audiences reflected on the historical context of the images, which sparked discussions about tradition, stereotypes, and the impact of colonial gaze. While Schomburgk sought to portray an idealized village life and reinforce the myth of Togo as Germany’s “model colony,” the images were shrouded in realities of forced labor, humiliation, and imperial arrogance.

Combining conversations with Togolese citizens and extensive archival footage, including footage from the travel diary of Gehrtson in 1913, Togoland Projections explores this painful history from the perspective of an independent present.

The next film is Death in Jenin, directed by Chris Giamo, a documentary that explores the ongoing conflict and tension in the Jenin region of Palestine. The film focuses on the daily lives of Jenin residents, highlighting the tensions they face due to the prolonged violence as well as the emotional and psychological impact of the conflict.

Through in-depth interviews and actual on-the-ground footage, Death in Jenin depicts the personal stories that are often hidden behind the headlines. Giamo presents a humane portrait of suffering, resilience, and the struggle to survive amidst extremely difficult conditions. The film is not only a record of tragedy, but also a reflection on humanity that continues to be tested by conflict.

The screening session was closed with Marc Einsiedel’s Just a Thing. The film explores themes of alienation, obsession, and the relationship between humans and materialism in modern life. With a unique artistic approach, Einsiedel invites the audience to question to what extent we allow objects to dominate and define who we are.

Each film in the program offered a different perspective on the burdens borne by those on the frontlines of conflict, forcing us to reflect on the moral complexities of the role of the audiences and our social responsibilities. International Competition 7: “Gaze and Burden to Bear” is not only a cinematic event, but also a space for critical reflection on the current state of the world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”12909,12910,12911,12912,12913″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
