Mereka bergegas mencari tempat duduk favorit, siap untuk kembali menatap layar setidaknya hingga dua jam ke depan. “After five hours, and now two hours,” ucap salah seorang anggota juri Arkipel musim ini sambil berlalu menuju pojok sofa, yang sedari awal menjadi tempat setianya.

The Body and Cinematic Space” css=”.vc_custom_1724907023032{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]As the time hit 7.10pm, people started to arrive, the energy of enthusiasm was in the air. They rushed to find their favorite seats, ready to stare at the screen for at least the next two hours. “After five hours, and now two hours,” said one of the jury members of this year’s Arkipel as he moved towards the corner of the sofa, which had been his loyal spot since the beginning. We only responded with laughter, understanding how the body would feel to be exposed to a film marathon three times a day, with different durations and numbers in each screening.

Soon, all the seats were filled. Luthfan NurRochman, Director of ARKIPEL Garden of Earthly Delights – 11th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival and the curator of the evening’s program, took over the audiences’ attention. He announced that the film to be watched was Staying Put (2023), by Nico Bunnik. In an enthusiastic tone, he mentioned that this film would take us back to a time when there was flexibility in adapting eschatological stories into local mythology, a concept known in Indonesia as carangan. The lights went out, and the movie began to play.

The audiences’ eyes seriously followed every movement on the screen, sometimes interspersed with laughter when the text of the dialog between the main character and his peers appeared on the screen. The laughter seemed to reflect a collective reflection on how we often laugh at something different from our own understanding. Ali, a loyal audience member at Forum Lenteng, said, “ We often laugh at something that we don’t understand, maybe because it doesn’t follow our logic, so the person is considered alienated from our thinking.”

The film, in all its complexity, manages to combine elements that seem paradoxical yet complementary: mythology, faith, terrorism, poor access to education, scarce job opportunities, and rampant poverty. The main character in this film seems to be able to bring the audiences into the consciousness of bodies trapped in the systemic polemic situation of a country. The director’s idea of framing between mythology and reality provides a cinematic experience that is rich in meaning and emotion.

One of the most interesting elements of Staying Put is how Bunnik uses visuals to depict the situation that the character encounters. When he passes people in a place crowded with human activities, it hints at Hieronymus Bosch’s legendary “Garden of Earthly Delights”. This image seems to put the audiences in the middle of the crowd, making them feel the heat, the sensation of noisy voices, and the press of other bodies, as if they can even smell the aroma that fills the location.

In addition, the communication between the characters in this film also brings the audience into a unique experience. The main character’s wandering mission brings the audience together with bodies that are accustomed to technology, but still communicate with local dialog that the audiences do not always understand. The dialog sounds like a mysterious and poetic mantra, conveying something deeper than just words.

As the film continued, a friend commented that the bodies in the film had gone through a lengthy approach during the research process. This shows how much Nico Bunnik pays attention to detail in building his cinematic world, giving depth to each character and scene. The film, with all its strengths and weaknesses, becomes a cinematic journey that not only entertains, but also provides a deep reflection on life and the meaning behind mythology and eschatology translated into modern life.

Thus, Staying Put is not just a film, but also an experience that brings the audiences together with a complex reality through the lens of mythology and eschatology, challenging them to see the world in a different way.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”12924,12925,12926,12927,12928,12929″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
