Sebelum program diputar, <\/span>Alifah Melisa <\/b>selaku kurator menyampaikan pengantar kuratorialnya tentang \u201chantu\u201d yang berkelana di lanskap-lanskap yang asing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Siapakah hantu ini? Salah satu monolog yang saya ingat di filem pertama, <\/span>In Flanders Fields<\/span><\/i> (2023) karya <\/span>Sachin<\/b>, kurang lebih mengatakan kalau orang mati jiwanya akan terperangkap lalu mengembara di bumi menjadi hantu. Hantu itu hadir di dalam filem. Awalnya hanya berupa isi hatinya yang tertuang di dalam surat dan dibacakan. Kemudian ia muncul dalam potongan-potongan foto sebagai kepingan memori yang sahih dari masa lalu. Potongan foto itu bersanding dengan latar lanskap pegunungan Eropa masa kini. Dari potongan foto itu kita bisa melihat wajahnya, seragam, dan senjata yang mereka pakai. Hantu itu adalah tentara Gurkha. Mereka adalah tentara yang berasal dari Nepal, India, tetapi berperang untuk negara yang menjajahnya. Tentara Gurkha hidup jauh dari rumah yang mereka rindukan dan mempertaruhkan nyawa di medan perang yang sama sekali asing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Di lanskap yang lain lagi\u2013lanskap yang gersang, panas, dan berpasir\u2013hidup hantu-hantu yang juga lain. Seperti di filem sebelumnya, hantu-hantu di filem <\/span>Chasing The Sun: El Shatt<\/span><\/i> (2023) karya <\/span>Ana Bilankov<\/b> hadir dalam foto utuh dan juga potongan-potongan foto. Mereka adalah penduduk Yugoslavia (sekarang terpecah menjadi Kroasia, Slovenia, Makedonia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, dan Kosovo) yang mengungsi ke Mesir akibat pendudukan Jerman. Berbeda dengan tentara Gurkha yang pergi ke tanah orang lain untuk berperang, mereka terpaksa harus mengungsi dari tanah airnya akibat perang.\u00a0 Perbedaan lanskap antara Yugoslavia dan Mesir mengharuskan mereka untuk beradaptasi di tanah yang baru. Namun, untuk tetap mempertahankan identitasnya, mereka masih melanjutkan hidup sebagaimana yang mereka dulu lakukan di tanah air mereka sendiri.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saya selalu mempertanyakan foto atau video yang diklaim berhasil menangkap hantu lewat kamera. Apakah teknologi yang objektif mampu menangkap hal-hal yang sifatnya paranormal sebagai bentuk kemumpuniannya? Kalaupun iya, untuk apa selain untuk menyebar ketakutan? Sejauh ini tidak ada bukti empiris mengenai hantu-hantu yang tertangkap kamera itu, malahan, lewat program kuratorial ini \u201cdibuktikan\u201d bahwa melalui eksplorasi filem, kini memungkinkan untuk menghadirkan \u201chantu\u201d dengan potongan-potongan foto dari masa lampau.<\/span><\/p>\n

Potongan-potongan foto dari arsip yang statis dan hitam-putih bersanding dengan lanskap berwarna masa kini yang dinamis menghadirkan efek jukstaposisi yang kuat. Sebuah cara yang adil untuk menghadirkan sekaligus untuk kita melihat hantu itu dalam bingkaian kuratorial ini. Pilihan untuk menggunakan foto arsip yang dipotong merupakan pilihan artistik yang segar dan efektif untuk menyampaikan kontrasnya dengan lanskap Eropa dan Mesir masa kini. Selain itu juga, setiap subjek dalam foto yang muncul dalam filem diperlihatkan sebagaimana adanya, meski dengan bingkaian \u201chantu\u201d tetapi penggambaran hantu seperti inilah yang memuat etika dan estetika. Kedua filem pada kuratorial ini menampilkan \u201chantu\u201d yang penting untuk dilihat, yang kehadirannya disengaja untuk merefleksikan sejarah, identitas, dan akibat dari peperangan alih-alih untuk menakuti ataupun sekedar cari sensasi.<\/span><\/p>\n

Program kuratorial ini hanya berisikan dua filem dengan total durasi 35 menit. Kedua filem pada program ini dikemas dengan apik oleh tema kuratorial yang membawa kita untuk melihat ke masa lampau. Program yang singkat, tetapi meninggalkan kesan di benak seolah-olah menghantui.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”English” tab_id=”1672356843702-2655322e-0974″][vc_column_text title=”International Competition 9: Ghost Caught on Camera” css=”.vc_custom_1725028376465{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The audiences\u2019 enthusiasm remained on the fourth day of the International Competition screening at ARKIPEL <\/span>Garden of Earthly Delights – 11th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival<\/span><\/i>. On Tuesday (27\/8) at 4 pm, the International Competition 9: \u201cThe Ghost Who Longs for His Home\u201d<\/span> program was screened. As usual, all the seats were filled. Before the program began, <\/span>Alifah Melisa<\/b>, the curator, delivered her curatorial introduction about the “ghosts” who wander in foreign landscapes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who are these ghosts? One of the monologues that I remember in the first film, <\/span>In Flanders Fields<\/span><\/i> (2023) by <\/span>Sachin<\/b>, more or less said that when a person dies, their soul is trapped and wanders the earth as a ghost. The ghost is present in the film. Initially, only the contents of his heart were poured out in a letter and read out. Then, he appeared in pieces of photos as pieces of tangible memory from the past. The pieces of photos were juxtaposed with the background of the present-day European mountain landscape. From the pieces of photos, we can see their faces, uniforms, and the weapons they use. The ghosts are Gurkha soldiers. They are soldiers who came from Nepal, but fight for the country that colonized them. Gurkha soldiers live far from the homes they miss and risk their lives on completely foreign battlefields.<\/span><\/p>\n

In another landscape – a dry, hot, and sandy landscape – live other ghosts. Like in the previous film, the ghosts in<\/span> Chasing The Sun: El Shatt<\/span><\/i> (2023) by <\/span>Ana Bilankov<\/b> are present in full and in pieces of photos. They are residents of Yugoslavia<\/span> (now divided into Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and Kosovo) who fled to Egypt due to the German <\/span>occupation. Unlike Gurkha soldiers who went to other people’s land to fight, they were forced to flee their homeland due to the war. The differences in landscape between Yugoslavia and Egypt required them to adapt to the new land. However, to maintain their identity, they still live the way they did in their homeland.<\/span><\/p>\n

I always question photos or videos claiming to have captured ghosts through cameras. Is objective technology capable of capturing paranormal things as a pinnacle of its ability? Even if so, what is the purpose other than to spread fear? So far, there is no empirical evidence regarding the ghosts captured on camera. In fact, through this curatorial program, it is “proven” that through film exploration, it is now possible to present “ghosts” with pieces of photos from the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

Static and black-and-white archive pieces juxtaposed with dynamic contemporary colored landscapes present a strong juxtaposition effect\u2014a fair way to present and for us to see the ghosts in this curatorial frame. The choice to use cropped archive photos is a fresh and effective artistic choice to convey the contrast with the contemporary European and Egyptian landscapes. In addition, each subject captured in the photos that appear in the film is shown as they are, though with a \u201cghostly\u201d frame, yet this depiction is both ethically and aesthetically compelling. The two films in this curatorial show “ghosts,” that are important to see, whose presence is deliberate to reflect history, identity, and the consequences of war rather than to scare or simply seek sensation.<\/span><\/p>\n

This curatorial program only contained two films with a total duration of 35 minutes. They were packaged nicely with a curatorial theme that took us back to the past.
