Ugeng T. Moetidjo, the curator, welcomed the audiences.

"_stv0118"

Sementara itu, pada pukul 16:00, saya kembali menonton sebuah filem berdurasi 2 jam 8 menit, berjudul My Talk with Florence (2015).

From “Corrosive” to “Angst”

“In this afternoon, in the 8th slot will be screened three films with the total duration is 148 minutes,” said the curator of International Competition 8: “Corrosive”, Ugeng T. Moetidjo, who is a writer and senior researcher at the Forum Lenteng.

Monday afternoon, August 22nd 2016, I attended two programs of International Competition in ARKIPEL, in a row. First screening was started at 1 pm, and the second one was at 4 to 6 pm. I also watched the International Competition 9: “Angst”, curated by Akbar Yumni, a Forum Lenteng member and also film critics.

At exactly 1 pm, the gate of GoetheHaus was still closed waiting for ARKIPEL volunteers to open it. I was a bit lucky that day since Scott Miller Berry and Ruth Noack, acting as the judges for this film competition, were also there.

The film started once speech from curator was given. There were Scott Miller Berry, Ruth Noack, and another four people in the room waiting for screening. Postcard to Godzilla (2015), directed by Louis Fried, was screened first. At first, I expected German dialogues in this film, since it was originated in German, and I still studied German Literature in university. However, I had to accept the fact that German dialogue was none to find in Postcard to Godzilla. There were only some blocks of pulleys. Even though this film was made in 2015, Postcard to Godzilla gave very ‘oldy’ nuance to its audience, with black-and-white coloring. I noticed that sometimes Scott and Ruth discussed the film with each other and laughed at some scenes.

Screened next after Postcard to Godzilla, I had Karst (2015) by Vladimir Todorovic. His film was 80-minute long, of which was quite unique and impressive. Karst depicted human interrelation and warmth in village. Several dialogues in this film showed the difference between the past and presence, like a city that was passed by the time. Aracati (2015) which was directed by Aline Portugal and Julia de Simone from Brazil closed the program. This 62-minute film portrayed people’s narration about wind in their place; was wind your friendly neighbor to help your life? Or was the wind your enemy for it was so mystical?

On 4 pm, I came back to the cinema room to watch My Talk with Florence (2015), its duration was 2 hours and 8 minutes. This film documented Florence Burnier-Baeur’s simple life, but she was able to make people imagine the hardship of her life through her answers, responding film crew’s questions.

Some of Florence’s monologues made seventeen people in the room grin, although it told tale about ‘scars’ that Florence had. Scott and Ruth also chuckled for the way Florence carelessly answered each question given. Although Florence kept her calm demeanor when she narrated her turbulent past, anxiety was still on her expressions, and we, as the audience, received that signal very clearly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
