Tentang Penayangan Program “Pengadilan Secara Sinematis”

"Akbar

Akbar Yumni, kurator “Pengadilan Secara Sinematis”, memberikan pengantar tentang filem Hitler, A Film from Germany (1977) karya Hans-Jurgen Syberberg. / Akbar Yumni, the curator of “A Trial by Cinema”, explained about the Hitler, A Film from Germany (1977) by hans Jurgen Syberberg.

On “A Trial by Cinema” Screening Program

With 442 minutes in total, Hitler: A Film from Germany was one of the longest films that Kineforum ever screened. Directed by Hans-Jurgen Syberber, this film was produced in Western German, England, and French in 1977; and in Indonesia this year through ARKIPEL, and became part of curatorial program held by Akbar Yumni. Acting as film critics and Forum Lenteng member, he chose ‘A Trial by Cinema’ as its curatorial title as based on this movie, Adolf Hitler didn’t get the ‘punishment’ he deserved aesthetically.

According to Walter Benjamin, fascism was an effort to ‘aesthetisize’ politics; a condition where changing politics to beauty production was expected, and to this day we could find this kind of process. Indirectly, this film became an aesthetic judgement for Hitler, with Freudian mourning method that tried to recover a trauma from the image of Hitler. Propaganda nuance enveloped the 4th part of this film, through audio and visual archives.

Hitler’s myth and image deconstruction was conducted through Richard Wagner’s theatrical approach. Decoration, costumes, properties, and even music scoring used in this film were from the famous German opera composer in the end of 19th century, Der Ring des Nibelungen. Dividing films to four chapters was part of that theatrical approach. Wagnerian ambiance was easily identified through the mixing of artistic materials (visual, poetry, role playing, music), of which resulted in total art. Ironically, during his life and reign, Hitler never jumped into war. Every command that he made was derived from report that he received through visual materials. War, for him, was nothing but a mere cinema in his mind.

The ‘un-normal’ duration of this film made—especially for general Indonesian audiences—ARKIPEL divide the screening schedule on August 23rd in two parts; one was on 1 pm and the rest was on 6 pm. This could be peculiar experience since it was like a theater that needed interlude during its play. On its first part, there were 21 people, and then 12 people were watching on the second part, but at the end of screening, there were only half of them. However, this decreasing audience number was expected by Akbar.

Harry Hariawan, a senior student, admitted that it was his first time to enjoy such long film. Although he realized that he still missed and didn’t comprehend some parts of the narration. Nevertheless, for Harry this film was incredible. The curator agreed that it was hard to catch a glimpse through Syberberg’s film and we needed extraordinary preserverance.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
