Dilahirkan di Korea pada September 1908, Hue Yong alias Hae Young menyaksikan langsung bagaimana Jepang meluluhlantakkan tanah air beserta kebudayaannya. Tanpa mampu melawan, Hue Yong mendapati namanya diubah menjadi Eitaro Hinatsu, sementara pekerjaannya menjadi seorang tentara Jepang yang dikirim ke Hindia Belanda untuk membantu upaya kolonialisasi Jepang.<\/p>\n

Setelah Hindia Belanda merdeka dan berganti nama menjadi Indonesia, Hinatsu yang tidak mendapatkan kesempatan untuk pulang ke tanah airnya memutuskan untuk tinggal di Indonesia dengan nama Dr. Huyung. Kisah Huyung menunjukkan bagaimana negara mampu mencerabut manusia dari akarnya, menghapus identitasnya, dan menaruh mereka dalam kondisi yang memilukan. Kisah Huyung merupakan kisah tragedi.<\/p>\n

Siapakah Dr. Huyung? Bagi sineas Indonesia, Dr. Huyung merupakan salah satu tokoh penting dalam kelahiran sinema Indonesia yang kontribusinya tidak kalah signifikan dengan Usmar Ismail, sang bapak perfileman Indonesia. Mahardika Yudha, kurator dari pameran KULTURSINEMA #4: Takdir Huyung, mengungkapkan bahwa Huyung menghadirkan perspektif lain dalam perfileman Indonesia.<\/p>\n

Masyarakat yang umumnya hanya mengenal sejarah perfileman Indonesia dari sisi Usmar Ismail dan Lembaga Kebudajaan Rakyat (Lekra) akan mendapati bahwa Huyung mampu memposisikan dirinya di tengah kedua pihak. Filem-filem yang dibuat oleh Dr. Huyung tidak hanya bertujuan mengedukasi (seperti Lekra), namun juga mampu mengikutsertakan unsur-unsur hiburan (seperti Usmar).<\/p>\n

Jasa Dr. Huyung terhadap perkembangan sinema Indonesia jelas tidak dapat diragukan lagi. Sayangnya, hal ini masih kurang terekspos oleh berbagai media di Indonesia, sehingga jasa beliau kurang mendapatkan apresiasi. Ditambah lagi, banyak filem-filem karya Dr. Huyung yang menghilang atau tidak dalam kondisi yang baik. Beruntung National Film Center (NFC) Jepang berhasil menemukan salah satu filem karya Dr. Huyung yang dibuat di Jepang dengan judul Kimi to Boku<\/em>. Filem inilah yang diputar di studio Kineforum pada Rabu, 23 Agustus 2017, sebagai bagian dari perhelatan ARKIPEL Penal Colony<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Chizuru Usui, seorang asisten kurator dari NFC Jepang membuka sesi pemutaran sore itu dengan menceritakan bagaimana NFC menemukan filem Kimi to Boku <\/em>dalam kondisi yang sangat tidak baik. Setelah direstorasi, filem yang awalnya berdurasi 69 menit tersebut hanya tersisa 24 menit. Selain itu, kualitas suara yang dihasilkan juga sangat buruk sampai-sampai Usui mengaku bahwa orang Jepang sekalipun tidak dapat memahami apa yang dibicarakan oleh tokoh-tokoh dalam filem tersebut. Pun begitu, kualitas gambar yang diambil oleh Dr. Huyung masih terjaga dengan baik.<\/p>\n

Kimi to Boku <\/em>pada dasarnya merupakan filem propaganda buatan Jepang yang ditujukan untuk merekrut orang Korea sebagai tentara Jepang. Filem tersebut mengisahkan seorang pemuda Korea yang sangat loyal dan mencintai Jepang hingga rela untuk pergi ke medan tempur demi membela Dai Nippon<\/em>. Seusai perang, pemuda Korea tersebut kembali ke tempat tinggalnya dan berkenalan dengan seorang perempuan Jepang yang mendiami Korea. Perlahan-lahan, mereka saling jatuh cinta dan memutuskan untuk menjadi sepasang kekasih. Di bagian akhir, sang pemuda menyanyikan sebuah lagu Korea yang sangat indah hingga membuat sang perempuan tersenyum.<\/p>\n

Kesan pertama yang saya dapatkan setelah menonton Kimi to Boku <\/em>adalah bahwa filem ini tidak terasa seperti filem propaganda. Jika dibuat pada era modern, filem ini mungkin akan menempati rak yang sama dengan filem-filem seperti Top Gun <\/em>(1986), Pearl Harbor <\/em>(2001), dan Fury <\/em>(2014), sebagai filem dengan genre perang dan drama. Filem ini memiliki seluruh elemen yang dibutuhkan untuk menciptakan sebuah drama yang menarik. Mulai dari protagonis yang tangguh, adegan laga yang menegangkan, suasana perang yang realistik, dan yang terpenting: percintaan (romance<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Menurut Chizuru Usui, Eitaro Hinatsu (nama Dr. Huyung di Jepang) memang memiliki pendekatan yang sangat berbeda dalam membuat filem propaganda. Kebanyakan filem propaganda yang ditayangkan di Jepang pada tahun 1940-an umumnya hanya bertujuan untuk mengedukasi dan menanamkan ideologi. Akibatnya, filem-filem ini menjadi kurang diminati dan sepi penonton.<\/p>\n

Menyikapi tren ini, Eitaro Hinatsu memutuskan untuk memasukkan unsur drama dalam Kimi to Boku <\/em>dan memasarkannya sebagai filem percintaan. Tidak hanya itu, Hinatsu juga merekrut aktor-aktor Jepang dan Korea yang paling kondang untuk bermain di filemnya. Kimi to Boku <\/em>pun berhasil sukses dari segi finansial dan penonton membanjiri ruang teater untuk menyaksikan filem ini.<\/p>\n

Dengan drama sebagai distraksi, Hinatsu, secara halus, berhasil menanamkan propaganda Jepang ke benak para penonton. Para penonton mungkin mengira bahwa mereka sedang menonton drama percintaan antara pemuda korea dan pemudi Jepang dengan latar belakang perang. Namun tanpa sadar, mereka akan berpikir bahwa warga Jepang dan Korea dapat berjuang bersama untuk mencapai satu kepentingan. Dengan cara inilah, kolonisasi psikologis terhadap warga Korea menjadi dimungkinkan. Akan tetapi, saya menduga bahwa ini bukanlah satu-satunya intensi yang dimiliki Dr. Huyung dari filem ini.<\/p>\n

Kimi to Boku<\/em> secara harafiah berarti \u2018kau dan aku\u2019. Saya meyakini bahwa judul filem ini sesungguhnya merepresentasikan harapan terpendam dari Dr. Huyung. Penggunaan kalimat \u2018kau dan aku\u2019 dapat digunakan dalam konteks pemisahan, namun dapat juga digunakan dalam konteks penyatuan. Sebagai seseorang yang bukan warga Jepang dan tidak dapat lagi menjadi warga Korea, Dr. Huyung tentunya paling memahami bagaimana sakitnya ketika kalimat \u2018kau dan aku\u2019 digunakan dalam konteks pemisahan. Seandainya tidak pernah ada Korea dan Jepang, seandainya kita dapat hidup bersama tanpa memikirkan siapa dan darimana kita berasal, mungkin perang dan penjajahan tidak akan pernah terjadi. Saya kira itulah harapan yang ingin disampaikan oleh Dr. Huyung melalui filem Kimi to Boku<\/em>. ***<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503648273-2-82″][vc_column_text title=”Huyung, Tragedy, and Hope: Notes on the Film Screening Kimi to Boku”]Hue Yong aka Hae Young aka Eitaro Hinatsu aka Dr. Huyung is a witness to the atrocity caused by the existence of a nation-state. Born in Korea on September 1908, Hue Yong aka Hae Young saw with his own eyes how Japan devastated his homeland and its cultures. Without a chance to resist, Hue Yong got his name changed into Eitaro Hinatsu and his job into Japanese soldier sent to Dutch East Indies to help Japan\u2019s colonialization effort.<\/p>\n

After Dutch East Indies became independent and changed its name into Indonesia, Hinatsu who did not get the chance to go home decided to live in Indonesia as Dr. Huyung. The story of Huyung shows how a state can uproot human from their homeland, erase their identity, and put them in a depressing situation. The story of Huyung is a story of tragedy.<\/p>\n

Who is Dr. Huyung? To many filmmaker in Indonesia, Dr. Huyung is one of an important figure in the creation of Indonesian cinema whose contribution is not less significant than Usmar Ismail, the godfather of Indonesian film. Mahardika Yudha, a curator from the exhibition KULTURSINEMA#4: Fate of Huyung, said that Huyung presents a different perspective in Indonesian film.<\/p>\n

Indonesian society in general who only knows about their country\u2019s film history through the lens of Usmar Ismail and People\u2019s Cultural Institution (Lekra) will find that Huyung can position himself in the middle of those two. The films made by Dr. Huyung are not only for the purpose of education (like Lekra) but can also include entertainment (like Usmar).<\/p>\n

Dr. Huyung\u2019s merit for the development of Indonesian cinema is definitely unquestionable. Unfortunately, this merit is still under-exposed by Indonesian media, which makes him less appreciated. Moreover, many films made by Dr. Huyung was lost or in a bad condition. It is very fortunate that National Film Center (NFC) Japan managed to find one of Dr. Huyung\u2019s film that was made in Japan titled Kimi to Boku<\/em>. This is the film that was screened in studio Kineforum on Wednesday, August 23rd<\/sup>, 2017, as a part of ARKIPEL Penal Colony.<\/p>\n

Chizuru Usui, an assistant curator from NFC Japan opened the session by telling about how NFC found the film Kimi to Boku <\/em>in a very bad condition. After getting restored, the film which was supposed to be 69 minutes long became 24 minutes instead. Even more, the sound quality was also very bad that Usui admit even Japanese can\u2019t understand what the character in the movie was talking about. Still, the quality of pictures taken by Dr. Huyung is still preserved well.<\/p>\n

Kimi to Boku <\/em>is basically a Japanese propaganda film aimed to recruit Koreans to be Japanese soldier. The film tells a story of young Korean man who is very loyal and and deeply in love with Japan, so much that he is willing to enter the battlefield to fight in the name of Dai Nippon<\/em>. After the war, the young Korean returned to his home and met a Japanese woman who lived in Korea. Slowly but surely, the two fell in love and they became a lover. In the end of the movie, the Korean man sang a very beautiful Korean Song which makes the woman smile.<\/p>\n

My first impression from Kimi to Boku <\/em>is that this film does not feel like a propaganda film at all. If it was made in the modern era, this film would have been placed in the same category as Top Gun <\/em>(1986), Pearl Harbor<\/em> (2001), and Fury <\/em>(2014) as a movie about war and drama. This film has every element needed to make an interesting drama. It has tough protagonist, action scene, realistic war atmosphere, and most importantly: romance.<\/p>\n

According to Chizuru Usui, Eitaro Hinatsu (Dr. Huyung\u2019s name in Japan) did have a different approach in making propaganda film. Most propaganda film played in Japan during 1940s are generally for education purpose and ideological brainwashing only. Because of that, this kind of film was unpopular as nobody would want to watch it.<\/p>\n

Eitaro Hinatsu, after seeing that trend, decided to include drama in Kimi to Boku <\/em>and market it as a romance movie. Not only that, Hinatsu also recruited famous actors from Japan and Korea to play in his film. Kimi to Boku <\/em>then managed to be a financial success as people from all around Japan went to the theatre to watch this film.<\/p>\n

With drama as a distraction, Hinatsu, in a subtle way, managed to plant the Japanese propaganda to the viewer\u2019s mind. Viewer might have thought that they were watching a romantic drama between Korean guy and Japanese girl with war as its background. But unconsciously, they will think that Japanese and Korean can work together to reach the same goal. With this method, psychological colonization to Korean people became possible. However, I suspect that there is more than meets the eye with this film.<\/p>\n

Kimi to Boku <\/em>literally means \u2018you and me\u2019. I believe that the title of this film actually represents Dr. Huyung\u2019s hope, deep down in his heart. The words \u2018you and me\u2019 can be used both in the context of separation and unification. As a person who is not Japanese and can no longer be a Korean, Dr. Huyung surely knows how hurtful it is when the words \u2018you and me\u2019 being used in the context of separation. If only there was never Korea and Japan, if only we could live together without worrying about who or where we came from, maybe war and colonialization might never happened.
