Catatan Panel 5 Forum Festival ARKIPEL homoludens

Notes on Forum Festival Panel V

The fifth and final panel of ARKIPEL homoludens – 6th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival brought up the theme of how existing communities, especially film communities, can determine language in cinema. The fifth panel was held at GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Indonesien, Menteng, Central Jakarta on Thursday, 9 August 2018, at 11:15 – 13:00 WIB.

The panel invited three panelists and a moderator, all of whom came from Indonesia, with 15 forum participants. Each of the three panelists described their experiences working in a film community or film organization. This panel begins with a statement and question from the moderator, Dhuha Ramadhani, who is a researcher at Forum Lenteng and the secretary of AKUMASSA, by saying that film community is no different than film culture as both needs to move in their own ways despite the constant assault from the industrialization of cinema.

Left to right: Findo Bramata Sandi, Dhuha Ramadhani, Dini Adanurani, Rachmat Hidayat Mustamin

Dhuha’s statement was further elaborated by the first panellist, namely Findo Bramata Sandi, the founder of Relair Cinema which was founded in August 2015. He is also the Director of Andalas Movie Exhibition. Findo casually told about his experience making a film entitled Rel Air of which the footage was displayed on the screen. He told that the film was made due to his curiosity to his homeland; Minangkabau. He tried to look for existing narratives about his homeland, using oral traditions that were still thick and embedded in his homeland. Due to making the film Rel Air, he finally made a community that researched cinema and wrote film criticisms. He agreed that not all of the members have a strong background in filmmaking, but they regularly held discussions and attended many other film community events, one of which was AKIPEL. Findo said that he and Relair Cinema continued to spread their network as widely as possible because qualified programs can only exist from research, discussion, and good relations between communities.

Another panellist who told about his experience in the local community was Rachmat Hidayat Mustamin, a writer and director, who told the story of Kinotika Community and Imitation Film Project from Makassar. In his presentation, Rachmat recounted the problems faced by film communities in Makassar after the presence of a film entitled “Uang Panai“. The film is often cited as the identity of Makassar film community even though its production is not community-based. Rachmat claimed that there is an obstacle in the pace of community development when exploring their cinematic characteristics, especially when the film “Uang Panai” became its starting point. The situation ultimately drove Kinotika Community to continue making discussion and inciting local value to add to the experience of watching a Makassar-themed film, without being trapped inside a box.

The only woman panellist in Panel V, Dini Adanurani who is a Philosophy student at University of Indonesia (UI) and member of UI Cinematography community, explained the experiences and problems faced by students in a community under the auspices of the University’s name. Dini said that by entering into the community on campus, UI Cinematography, for example, students could take a break and seek refresher outside of their academic life. For her, the community on campus became an experience where students were given the opportunity to taste the world of adults, but still in the campus vicinity. However, there is often a tendency from campus to make special programs, even systems that feel mechanical and far from being free or creative. This is a point of conflict for members of the community where idealism and reality continue to be in discord. However, Dini also said that the presence of film communities on campus, for her, was also one way to represent the voice of students in Indonesian cinema.

In this panel, there were questions raised by a member of ITB Student’s Film League community, Fay, who asked about the language used in cinema. The three panelists responded to Fay’s question with a pretty similar point, that the use of language depends on its production, the involvement of nearby people, and the inherent culture. The vision to be conveyed through the film must also be able to reach the audience in regard to which image that must be emphasized more.

The fifth panel is the final panel of Forum Festival in ARKIPEL #6: homoludens.
