Merayakan Marjinalitas Bersama Quame Nyantakyi

Host: Otty Widasari, salah satu anggota tim selektor

Apa gunanya membantu tanpa adanya ketulusan? Betapa isu political correctness menjadi sebuah kewajiban kosong yang tak dapat dinilai lagi maknanya. Pada akhirnya, keputusan suntik mati atau eutanasia, yang sering dipertimbangkan untuk menjadi jalan akhir hidup Quame, pada dasarnya bisa menjadi pilihan yang justru subversif dari Quame.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_tab][vc_tab title=”English” tab_id=”1503218961-2-58″][vc_column_text title=”Notes on International Competition 1″ css=”.vc_custom_1534060525430{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

Celebrating Marginality with Quame Nyantakyi

“Is life beautiful?”

That philosophical question was raised by Quame Nyantakyi to his therapist during one of his regular therapy session. The therapist who seemed to be indifferent only responded to Quame’s question casually. “Yes. In my opinion, life is beautiful and exciting,” She answered briefly. A few minutes later, the therapist lost her patience with Quame, who she thought did not care about the therapy and drove him out. This is one of the scenes from the film The Fly Misery of Quame Nyantakyi, a film that I have to watch and understand for that day’s reporting tasks.

Host: Otty Widasari, one of the selector team

The atmosphere at GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Indonesien, Jakarta, that afternoon was rather quiet. There are only a few visitors or students passing by around the building. I came too fast for today’s reporting assignment. In fact, the clock was showing 12.15. That day, Friday, August 10, 2018, was the premiere of the International Competition 1 as one of the programs of ARKIPEL homoludens – 6th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival 2018. Around 13.40, the film screening was opened by Otty Widasari, as the film selector, by explaining a bit about the film in English. Inevitably it must be in English, because the number of visitors was initially only 3 people – me, a guy and Isabelle Vander Stockt (the distribution team of one of the ARKIPEL homoludens International Competition films from Belgium). In the middle of screening, Sonal Jain who was also one of the curators at ARKIPEL homoludens, and about 2 other visitors sat in the audience seats.

The film, directed by Jan Willem van Dam, tells the story of Quame Nyantakyi, a psychotic patient and former criminal, who was rehabilitated by ID-Care, a witness protection program, with the aim of returning Quame to the society. Besides being preoccupied with routine activities with his therapists, Quame was also advised to take part as an actor in the production of fictional films with the theme of murder crimes.

Broadly speaking, this 120-minute film is indeed trying to show how Quame, with all of his problems, culture and illnesses, can survive in a fictional film environment. In addition to living as a psychotic and a former criminal, Quame’s position is even more marginalized with the fact that he is a homosexual and was born from a nation that was formerly colonized by the country who takes care of him. In this film, we are invited to explore the personality and life experiences of Quame, who at first glance looks like a normal person, but is actually a deep thinker and sometimes tends to be nihilistic. The many mind-boggling questions and thoughts from Quame shook the audience and lead them to re-evaluate their life. Jan Willem van Dam blurs the line between reality and fiction in this film. I was confused to distinguish between the scene of fictional film and real life. Ryan, one of the audiences who faithfully watched the film until finish, also agreed with this sentiment. But for him, the process of blurring actually made this film more interesting.

Therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists in charge of Quame are arguably a representation of an antagonistic country towards marginal groups such as Quame. The unpleasant treatment received by Quame, ranging from force-naming Quame as Freddy Inderson, classifying Quame as a primate, to the therapy session that did not empathize with Quame’s condition. What’s the point of helping without sincerity? It appears that the issue of political correctness has become a banal obligation with no meaning in it. In the end, the decision to die with euthanasia, which is often considered as Quame’s endline, can actually be considered as Quame’s subversive decision.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tab][/vc_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
