International Competition 5: A Journey through Analysis and Observation

On Saturday (11/8) at GoetheHaus, Goethe Institut Indonesien, Jakarta, Affirmatory Tracing: Journey Through the Labyrinth of the Past Anxiety, Poetic Paranoia, and Present Horror was shown as a part of the International Competition. This program was attended by 18 audiences and consisted of 3 films: “Dangsan” (2017, dir. Geonhee Kim), “48 Years – Silent Dictator” (2018, dir. Hiroshi Sunairi), and “Sub Terrae” (2017, dir. Nayra Sanz Fuentes). Although the stories are different, all these films were able to create a sense of unease and anxiety.

The first film was Dangsan by Geonhee Kim from South Korea. Geonhee Kim was born in Dangsan, Seoul. Dangsan explores Geonhee’s past childhood and the questions that haunt her memories. This project forces the filmmaker to come back to her childhood home to find the source of her anxieties.

Without the help of dialogue, Geonhee was able to communicate to the audience through texts and the visuals. Geonhee looks back at her hometown through a different lens; she is seeing Dangsan through the eyes of someone full of questions. These questions became the basic structure of the story. Dangsan is essentially a visual and personal journey for Geonhee to further understand herself and the past world she left behind.

The second film was “48 Years – Silent Dictator” by Hiroshi Sunairi form Japan. Hiroshi was living in New York when he heard Iwao Hakamada has been released. He became interested with this case after he learned that Iwao developed prison psychosis or also called institutional psychosis due to the trauma he developed after 48 years in isolation prison. As oppose to other mainstream media, Hiroshi wanted to focus more on this psychosis and how it had affected Iwao’s views on the world.

Divided into different chapters, Hiroshi discusses different topics with Iwao, such as his cell, his life before going to jail, the food he was given, women and survival, to name a few. For 74 minutes, accompanied by unsettling music, 48 Years – Silent Dictator is a mixture of confusions. With answers that might not always make sense and keep dragging on, the audience is introduced to the world of Iwao and the complexity of the human mind.

The last one, “Sub Terrae” by Narya Sanz Fuentes from Spain, shows a graveyard filled with vultures. The camera takes the audiences to look around until it finally shows a mountain of garbage that is being collected by people. The visual in the film gives the impression of death. Plastic garbages take about 100 years to decomposes, longer than the average lifespan of the average human being. Sub Terrae is a reminder for the audience of their mortality and the effects they leave which might linger even longer.
