A Room with a Coconut View karya Tulapop Saenjaroen.

Afrian Purnama memaparkan esai kuratorialnya

Atmosfer di antara 11 penonton berubah 180 derajat di filem kedua, A Room with A Coconut View.

Tremor dan A Room with A Cococnut View mendemonstrasikan betapa luwesnya medium filem dalam mengungkapkan gagasan-gagasan pembuatnya.

Exploring Medium and Pessimism of the Future on the International Competition 8

In the films screened in ARKIPEL homoludens – 6th Jakarta International Experimental and Documenter Film Festival, the notion of Homo ludens is not only represented through the narrative, but also the usage of medium in processing that narrative. This standpoint is represented in International Competition 8: Ludic and Experimentation, screened on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in GoetheHaus, Goethe-Institut Indonesien, Jakarta. This program was started at 01.00 PM, opened by Afrian Purnama.

The two films in the session are Tremor by Annik Leroy and A Room with A Coconut View by Tulapop Saenjaroen. It is difficult to imagine that these two works can be connected under the same program. Tremor depicts a form of terror that had always been present throughout European history, through an interesting visual dualism: natural landscape and European civilization, narrated by four survivals of those historical tragedies. Visualized in black and white, the trauma they told becomes more intense. Sometimes, those narratives switched into an anxious, tenseful piano performance. Through the unconventional storytelling, the dramatic of the story accelerated well through the play of those audiovisual elements. But, it is still hard to absorb a heavy notion of history, civilization, and the essence of humanity itself—let alone with a slow visual tempo.

Afrian Purnama explained his curatorial essay

The atmosphere among the 11 audiences completely changed upon the next film, A Room with A Coconut View. The film was opened with a conversation between a hotel employee in Bangsaen tourist town, Tanya, and an England tourist, Alex. The conversation was represented through a digitally produced voice of a man and woman, but it also happened in a visual exchange through images appearing according to the context of their conversation. It evokes an impression that these two entities were not human, but artificial intelligences that collected their data from the internet’s search engine. This gives rise to another question on the condition of human today: if our interactions were mediated through images and videos from the internet, sometimes even emojis, does that make us the same with Tanya and Alex?

Unfortunately, the filmmakers did not attend the screening. Both of the films raised many questions from me, especially the second one, in which one of the scenes presented a mix of abstract pictures that confused me. At the end of A Room with A Coconut View, Alex took us to reflect on where we are now, and how the concept of time gets blurry in the era of technology.

Tremor and A Room with A Coconut View demonstrated the flexibility of medium to express the ideas from the filmmakers. The visual exploration reaches its farthest point on those two films. Apart from the medium, I think they hold certain pessimism for the future in its narration, even though it was expressed in different ways.
