Special Screening 02: The Language of Vertical Cinema https://arkipel.org/the-language-of-vertical-cinema/ https://arkipel.org/the-language-of-vertical-cinema/#respond Tue, 14 Dec 2021 09:03:48 +0000 https://arkipel.org/?p=11263 In 1930, the Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein wrote an essay complaining about the standardization of cinema screen (widescreen) as the default format of film presentation. Widescreen, according to Eisenstein, is merely a thoughtless reproduction of 19th century paintings that were mostly of horizontal images.

Special Screening 03: Counting with Om Pius https://arkipel.org/counting-with-om-pius/ https://arkipel.org/counting-with-om-pius/#respond Tue, 14 Dec 2021 08:31:34 +0000 https://arkipel.org/?p=11255 Om Pius sleeps sitting up, soundly. It was quite around him, no sign of activity, and his snore was getting clearer. It was a fine noon. After a while, the screen turns black, reflecting my face as the spectator.

DOLO https://arkipel.org/dolo/ https://arkipel.org/dolo/#respond Thu, 25 Nov 2021 07:07:24 +0000 https://arkipel.org/?p=10925 Dance was the one that links Sardono with film. As a dancer, he uses film in his journey to learn various cultures in different locations, especially in Indonesia. Initially, he intended the recording as a kind of diary, not to be showcased to the public. However, when Ari Dina Krestiawan curated the archive exhibition of Sardono W. Kusumo’s film in Singapore in 2016, apparently those films unfolded Sardono’s filmic awareness.

The Dance of Camera https://arkipel.org/the-dance-of-camera/ https://arkipel.org/the-dance-of-camera/#respond Sun, 25 Aug 2019 15:44:59 +0000 https://arkipel.org/?p=10230 Dhuha said that today, experimental film is assumed to stop at merely visual and formal experimentation. This happens in Indonesia’s experimental film scene. With Sardono’s experimentation in three of his works presented in this program, I agree with Dhuha that Sardono’s ideas contain an intense experimental representation in Indonesia’s historical context, perhaps even in the Southeast Asia.
