In ARKIPEL 2014 - Electoral Risk, Festival Updates

Lokakarya dibagi menjadi dua sesi.

Working from A Cup of Coffee and A Flash of Light

JAKARTA, ARKIPEL, Forum Lenteng — Held at the historical State Film Production Laboratory Building (Gedung Produksi Film Negara), Jalan Otto Iskandar Dinata, Jatinegara, East Jakarta, this sfilm processing workshop became the second workshop in a series of events from ARKIPEL Electoral Risk – Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival 2014. The workshop was organized by Lab Laba-Laba, which, the PFN lab building is their headquarters. Since February 2014, Lab Laba-Laba has held a wide variety of activities related to the introduction, exploration, and interpretation of analog film. The workshop was held on Saturday, September 13, 2014.

Aims to expand the knowledge of analog film processing techniques that are simple and can be made at home, this workshop introduced Rayogram and Caffenol-C. Rayogram itself is a process of creating an image in a dark room using small found objects, then placed directly on top of celluloid and then being radiated only in a fraction of a second. Caffenol-C is a liquid for processing images made with a cup of coffee, vitamin C, and washing soda.

The workshop was divided into two sessions. The first session was followed by four participants. The first two are a married couple who are also film a worker, while two other participants coming from Antara Gallery. Guides in this session were Hasumi Shiraki, and Tumpal, Alin, and Frans from Spider Lab. For the second session, attended by three participants, and guided completely by Scott Miller Berry, Richard Tuohy and Diana Barrie.

At the beginning of the workshop, they were invited to mix the mixture caffenol-c. With the direction was given by Hasumi and Tumpal, they heat the water, and then mixed it with instant coffee, vitamin c and washing soda. The participants were frolic by demonstrating a cooking presenter style while pouring the ingredients. Then, instead of the usual stirring with a spoon to make coffee, the guide from Lab Laba-Laba took the moment to show off one of their laboratory collection, ie a magnetic stirrer machine. The workings of the machine wowed the participants there: merely need to drop a small magnet sticks to the tube, then the machine underneath movesDthe contents of the tube due to the magnetic power between the engine and the magnet. After that, the mixture was transferred and set aside to prevent overheating.

While waiting for the caffenol-c to be cool, participants were invited to a dark room to get explaination about the working principle of Rayogram. Each pair of participants got 10 meters roll of 16mm film, to make a film as long as 15 seconds. In total darkness, unless aided by a red light, celluloid held on the table and overwritten with a variety of small objects. The guides had provided a variety of beads to be used by the participants, but it turned out Panda and Sofi from Galeri Antara, had brought their own Lego toys to be used on their tape. Once placed on the ribbon, the mentor was there to help illuminate the flash at the right time, which is in a millisecond count.

After all the bands had been irradiated, the tape rolled into the lomo tanks, a tool for washing the film. Then the lights turned on, showing their desks cluttered after working in the dark.

“Be sure to clean these up, eh?” joked mentor while pretending to leave them in the dark room.

The participant then laughing while looking at the floor filled with trinkets they had dropped. Working in the dark that was the fun and thrilling thing from Rayogram. The author herself hit the wallseveral times when trying to see the work of participants.

Participants were then invited to return to the lab to wash the film. Lomotank make the process easier just need to fill caffenol-c into the hole in the middle, then turn the knob to the specific count to stir the liquid in it, then take advantage of the principle of water level: lifting the lomo tank and lowering the hose connected from lomo tanks towards sink to drain fluids. After that, the lomo tanks were filled with water to wash the rest of caffenol-c. Once clean, they filled the lomotank with fixer to stop the process of caffenol-c, then discarded it. Once cleaned again with water, the films were removed and dried in hanger.

Participants and mentors were finally able to admire the work of this workshop. The girls who used Lego toys were satisfied with their work, and get praises from the committee. Less fortunate for the couples, whose some parts of their celluloid were not visible due to prolonged exposure.

Committee and his wife had joked. “Relax, neighbor’s grass is always greener, hahaha!” they said, when the husband stared in awe at the successful results of other participants.

Panda and Sofi interested in attending this workshop as a continuation of the education that they got in the Galeri Antara. While other participants who were also artists and film makers, felt the need to have this workshop in order to support their profession.

Scott Miller Berry, Director of the Images Festival, saw the workshop as an opportunity for artists to engage in the process of creating their own film. “Most of the time, the artists only send the raw material to the lab to be processed by the experts, scientist, by others. Through this workshops, an artist can work independently and experience the creation process until the end. ” he explained.

As one of the mentors in this workshop, Scott has a background in photography and teaching at the annual residency in North Toronto, Canada, named “Film Farm”, where the artist followed an intensive workshop for a week in the summer, with black 16mm celluloid -white, and manual processing, where the artists can also experiment with coloring the film. Next Tuesday, Scott also will give a workshop on the tinting and dyeing.

“I really like being in a dark room,” admitted Scott. “I really like the experience of being in the dark, seeing the image comes alive with chemical mixtures. It’s very meditative room in my opinion.”

“Like being in the womb, then?” I said.

“Exactly! Good example. The process of creating and await the results of the process is very exciting for me,” this Canadian man replied.

We also talked about building PFN itself. Many local filmmakers who send their material to be processed abroad, when in fact Indonesian have this facility which is this building.

Hasumi, who became speaker in this session, said she was happy and really love the film processing manually. She was somewhat confused to accurately describe her love for this, especially considering that her English is also limited, but she nodded eagerly when Tumpal try to guess that the direct involvement of the hands and physically engagement in the process were the interesting side of this process.
