Catatan Konferensi Pers ARKIPEL bromocorah

Jakarta, Minggu (18/9) pukul 11:00 WIB, para tamu media menunggu dimulainya Konferensi Pers ARKIPEL bromocorah – 7th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival di Auditorium Museum Nasional. Acara ini kemudian dibuka oleh Alifah Melisa yang menyambut awak media yang telah hadir dan memperkenalkan para pembicara hari ini, yakni Yuki Aditya sebagai Direktur Festival ARKIPEL, Arifin sebagai Kepala Bidang Apresiasi Tenaga Perfilman dan Pengarsipan, Dhuha Ramadhani sebagai kurator Candrawala dan program penayangan khusus ARKIPEL bromocorah bertajuk Focus on Sardono W. Kusumo: Experimental Cinema in Indonesia, dan Afrian Purnama sebagai perwakilan kurator Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia.

Pembicara pertama, Yuki Aditya, bercerita mengenai ARKIPEL dan bagaimana ARKIPEL mencoba merefleksikan kejadian sosial. Kata bromocorah yang menjadi tajuk ARKIPEL tahun ini diambil dari cerita pendek karya Mochtar Lubis yang menceritakan sosok yang dilihat sebagai “penjahat” tetapi selalu hadir dalam sistem masyarakat.  Yuki lanjut menjelaskan program-program yang bisa ditemukan pada ARKIPEL bromocorah – 7th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival ini, termasuk pameran Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia. Kultursinema pada kali ini hendak menghadirkan perkembangan dan sejarah sinema Indonesia. Dengan tema Gelora Indonesia, Kultursinema kali ini ingin menunjukkan periode perfileman pada tahun 1950-an. Pada program Kompetisi Internasional, ARKIPEL bromocorah akan menayangkan 28 filem dari 19 negara, termasuk 2 filem dari Indonesia.

Selain kedua program di atas, terdapat pula program kuratorial yang bekerja sama dengan Institut Français Indonesia, program Candrawala dan penayangan khusus sinema Sardono yang keduanya dikuratori oleh Dhuha Ramadhani, serta presentasi khusus oleh Scott Miller Berry dari Toronto yang sekaligus akan mengadakan pelatihan penggunaan seluloid. Sebagaimana tahun sebelumnya, ARKIPEL pada tahun ini pun akan menghelat program simposium Forum Festival yang menghadirkan 5 panel yang membahas konteks bromocorah dalam filem dan aktivisme, dengan pembicara salah satunya ialah Garin Nugroho dan Edwin.

Pada pameran Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia pun akan dilaksanakan diskusi mengenai pengarsipan oleh Pusat Pengembangan Perfilman Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan RI (PUSBANG), Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia (ANRI), Perum Produksi Film Negara (PFN), PT Render Indonesia, bersama Otty Widasari dan Luthfan Nur Rochman yang juga membahas bagaimana seniman menggunakan arsip sebagai materi berkarya.

Afrian Purnama selaku salah satu kurator Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia memaparkan proses kurasi Kultursinema #6 yang hasilnya sebentar lagi akan dipamerkan di Museum Nasional. Afrian menjelaskan bagaimana ia bersama dengan rekan kurator lainnya, yakni Luthfan Nur Rochman, Prashasti Wilujeng Putri, Robby Ocktavian, Dini Adanurani, dan Wahyu Budiman Dasta, membahas arsip filem berita Gelora Indonesia sebagai catatan harian pemerintah. Sekilas Afrian menjelaskan bagaimana “catatan” ini diproduksi setiap minggu. Riset yang dilakukan untuk pameran ini berjalan sejak Januari awal tahun. Para kurator ini rutin setiap minggu menonton di ANRI untuk mencoba melihat Gelora Indonesia dengan sudut pandang yang lebih spesifik, misal dari perspektif olahraga atau perempuan.

Setelah Afrian selesai, Dhuha Ramadhani menjelaskan proses pemikiran kurasi Candrawala; bagaimana ia mencoba membingkai Candrawala dengan sinema saat ini lewat filem Indonesia yang didaftarkan untuk ARKIPEL bromocorah. Dari filem Indonesia yang didaftarkan ini, ada bingkaian konteks politik yang ditarik olehnya sebagai landasan program Candrawala tahun ini. Beberapa kata kunci yang disinggungnya antara lain “internet memes” dan “ketakutan” dalam konteks sosial-politik di Indonesia sejak tahun 2016-2019. Untuk program Penayangan Khusus, Dhuha mengkurasi filem-filem Sardono W. Kusumo, seorang tokoh tari kontemporer paling penting di Indonesia. Melalui program ini Dhuha menelusuri sejarah filem eksperimental di Indonesia dan kecenderungan estetika apa yang membuatnya khas dari diskursus filem eksperimental di dunia.

Pembicara yang terakhir, Arifin dari PUSBANG, menjelaskan mengenai tugas PUSBANG dalam pengarsipan. Ia menjelaskan kewajiban pemerintah untuk mendukung program pengarsipan dan pengembangan filem. Arifin melihat misi ARKIPEL yang searah dengan PUSBANG, yaitu melihat kembali Indonesia lewat perfileman. Dengan demikian, beliau sangat mendukung ARKIPEL hingga ia melibatkan secara penuh lembaga-lembaga lain seperti Museum Nasional, PFN, dan ANRI. Dengan sedih hati, Arifin merasa kerja mereka masih belum maksimal dikarenakan waktu yang tak banyak. Ia berharap bisa bekera sama lagi ke depannya secara lebih maksimal.

Notes on ARKIPEL bromocorah Press Conference

Jakarta, Sunday (18/9) 11:00 am, the media guests waited for the ARKIPEL bromocorah7th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival Press Conference at the National Museum Auditorium. The press conference was started by Alifah Melisa who greeted the media crews and introduced the speakers; Yuki Aditya as the Festival Director of ARKIPEL, Arifin as the Head of Appreciation of Film and Archiving Staff of PUSBANG FILM, Dhuha Ramadhani as the curator of Candrawala and ARKIPEL bromocorah special screening program ‘Focus on Sardono W. Kusumo: Experimental Cinema in Indonesia’, and Afrian Purnama as the representative of the curatorial team of Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia.

The first to speak, Yuki Aditya, spoke of ARKIPEL and how ARKIPEL attempts to reflect social occurrences. The term bromocorah as the theme of ARKIPEL 2019 derives from a short story by Mochtar Lubis, telling the story of a certain figure seen as a ‘villain’ but always present in the system. Yuki further explained the programs that will be held in ARKIPEL bromocorah – 7th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, including Kultursinema #6: Gelora Indonesia exhibition. Kultursinema intends to show the development and history of Indonesian cinema. With Gelora Indonesia as its theme, Kultursinema this year intends to present the Indonesian cinema from the 1950s. On the International Competition program, ARKIPEL bromocorah will screen 28 films from 19 countries, including 2 films from Indonesia.

In addition to the two programs above, there is also a curatorial program in collaboration with Institut Français Indonesia, Candrawala program and special screening of Sardono, both curated by Dhuha Ramadhani, and special presentation by Scott Miller Berry from Toronto who will also conduct a workshop on celluloid use. As in the previous year, ARKIPEL this year will hold a Forum Festival symposium program that presents 5 panels discussing the context of bromocorah in film and activism, with speakers including Garin Nugroho and Edwin.

Kultursinema # 6: Gelora Indonesia exhibition will also hold a discussion on archiving by the Film Development Center of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia, the State Film Company, PT Render Indonesia, with Otty Widasari and Luthfan Nur Rochman who will also speak of how artists use archives as work material.

Afrian Purnama, as one of the curators of Kultursinema # 6: Gelora Indonesia, explained the curatorial process of Kultursinema # 6, of which the results will soon be exhibited at the National Museum. Afrian explained how he, along with other curators, namely Luthfan Nur Rochman, Prashasti Wilujeng Putri, Robby Ocktavian, Dini Adanurani, and Wahyu Budiman Dasta, discussed the Gelora Indonesia news film archive as a daily government log. Afrian explained briefly how these “log” were produced every week. Research conducted for this exhibition had been running since January beginning of the year. These curators watched these archives at ANRI every week to try to see Gelora Indonesia with a more specific perspective, for instance, from the perspective of sports or women issue.

After Afrian, Dhuha Ramadhani explained the curatorial process of Candrawala; how he attempted to frame Candrawala with the current cinema through Indonesian films submitted to ARKIPEL bromocorah. From these submitted Indonesian films, he drew a political context framing as the foundation of this year’s Candrawala program. He linked the social-political situation in Indonesia from 2016 to this day with the culture of internet memes and how it is relevant to the idea of fear as an instrument of control. For the Special Screening program, Dhuha curates the films of Sardono W. Kusumo, a most important contemporary dance figure in Indonesia. Through this program, Dhuha traces the history of experimental films in Indonesia and its aesthetic tendencies that make it different from the common discourse of the experimental film.

The last speaker, Arifin from the Film Development Center of the Ministry of Education and Culture, explained the Development Center’s tasks in archiving. He explained the government’s obligation to support the film archiving and development program. Arifin saw the ARKIPEL missions are in the same direction as the Development Center, to rethink of Indonesia through cinema. As such, he was very supportive of ARKIPEL until he fully involved other institutions such as the National Museum, the State Film Company, and the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia. Sadly, Arifin felt their work was still not optimal due to the limited time. He hoped to be able to work together once more optimally in the future.
