Malam Penutupan ARKIPEL: Memupuk Perkawanan, Merayakan Sinema
ARKIPEL Closing Night: Fostering Friendship, Celebrating Cinema
No need to have a fancy stage with flickering lights. For it only takes the warmth of friendship to present a real stage for cinema and all the surrounding knowledge. That was the impression given at the awarding and closing night of ARKIPEL Garden of Earthly Delights – 11th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival at Forum Lenteng, Sunday (1/9/2024).
In this simple space, the warmth was so dynamic. Discussions never stopped to revive the cinema culture. There was no excessive crowd, but the spirit of sharing knowledge has continued to grow from the consistency of its people.
The festival organized by Forum Lenteng had been running since August 14, which was marked by the exhibition’s opening under the same title as the festival, Garden of Earthly Delights. Festival Director, Luthfan Nur Rochman, explained that this year’s Arkipel was inspired by sensory readings to dissect the discourse of cinema and the various contemporary issues that are intertwined behind it.
“This year’s Arkipel has been designed since January. Arkipel is always presented by reading the turmoil of global issues. The current sensory theme cannot be separated from the reality of the Gaza conflict’s images circulation, for example, which has stimulated our senses in recent years,” said Luthfan.
This year, Arkipel received as many as 900 films from 84 countries, 79 of which are Indonesian films, which offer various perspectives in response to the ongoing geopolitical phenomena to this day. “It is a privilege for us to witness contemporary responses to geopolitical conflicts to technological developments in the medium of cinema from global citizens in their respective locations,” continued Luthfan.
After going through a rigorous selection and judging process, there were four films that won awards in four different categories, the Arkipel Award, Jury Award, Peransi Award, and Forum Lenteng Award.
The main award, which is the Arkipel Award, went to Ocean Mud Pickle (2024) by Indian filmmaker Paribartana Mohanty. This award is presented for its high artistic achievement along with its potential strength in interpreting the choice of contextual perspectives. “The winner of this award can also become or represent Arkipel’s statement regarding the values offered,” said Luthfan.
Quoted from the Arkipel catalog, Ocean Mud Pickle, a 40-minute film, tells the story of Satabhaya people who were forced to move from their coastal village, but other creatures survive and can even thrive there.
Furthermore, the Jury Award was given to Bleared Eyes of Blue Glass (2023) by Korean director Kyujae Park, and the Peransi Award was given to Luminous Shores (2023) by Maira Ayala. Meanwhile, the best film category chosen by Forum Lenteng was given to Staying Put (2023) by Dutch director Nico Bunnik.
The founder of Forum Lenteng and the jury representative, Hafiz Rancajale, stated that Arkipel is not just a festival that exists as a space to watch, more than that, Arkipel is a space for political statements through cinema culture.
“Because we built this space for the public and we hope it becomes a space for sharing knowledge. We truly hope that Arkipel can provide energy to continue to ignite or provoke our critical power,” said Hafiz.
“I am very happy to witness the enthusiasm of people to attend this event and fill this simple theater. Hopefully it can be a discussion space to celebrate and enliven cinema,” Hafiz continued.
