Filem ini berangkat dari adaptasi novel dengan judul yang sama karya Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana pada tahun 1932. Kemampuan adaptasi sutradara membawa filem ini menjadi mandiri secara sastrawi dari pengaruh teksnya, sehingga membawa konteks berbeda dari spasialitas waktu produksi yang melingkupinya. Filem ini dipenuhi oleh image lanskap hutan sebagai ruang liminalitas dari pergulatan dua ‘moralitas’ yang berbeda dari dua figur: Medasing sebagai pemimpin gerombolan perampok, dan Sayu, seorang gadis perawan sebagai tawanan sanderanya. Figur Sayu yang berada di tengah hutan dan para perampok membawa kontras tesendiri, namun ia bisa menjadi katalisator ketika mengandaikan kehadiran yang ‘liyan’ (Medasing).

This film departs from a novel adaptation of the same title by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana in 1932. The ability of director’s adaptation brings this film to become literally independent from its textual influences, thus it brings a different context from the spatiality of the surrounding production time. The film is filled with the image of forest landscape as a liminality space from the two different struggles of ‘morality’ of the two figures: Medasing as the leader of robbers, and Sayu, a virgin girl as his hostage. The figure of Sayu in the middle of forest and the robbers bring a contrast of its own, but it can be a catalyst when it presupposes the presence of the other (Medasing).

Filem ini adalah eskperimen terhadap pencarian image yang hilang tentang kekerasan yang dialami oleh Rithy Panh (sutradara) pada masa kecil di masa rezim militer Khmer Merah. Ia hanya menemukan arsip footage-footage yang diproduksi oleh rezim Khmer Merah, yang berisikan image propaganda yang menjanjikan sebuah masyarakat yang makmur di Kamboja. The Missing Picture bukan ingin menggantikan image yang hilang, tapi menciptakan image tentang proses pencarian image yang hilang itu sendiri. Ia menggunakan figur-figur patung kecil tanah liat bukan sebagai ganti dari ‘representasi’ terhadap masa lalunya, tetapi lebih sebagai image tentang trauma, kehilangan, testimony, dan pergulatan medium sebagai kontruksi realitas itu sendiri.

This film is an experiment on the search of lost images about the violence experienced by Rithy Panh (director) in his childhood during the Khmer Rouge military regime. He only found footage archives produced by the Khmer Rouge regime, which contains a promising propaganda image of a prosperous society in Cambodia. The Missing Picture does not want to replace the lost image, but creates an image about the process of searching the lost image itself. He uses small clay figures instead of ‘representations’ of his past, but rather as an image of trauma, loss, testimony, and the struggle of the medium as construction of reality itself.
