“Kurator, Sinema, dan Publik”

Penggunaan kata ‘kurator’ di medan perfileman Indonesia, belum umum. ARKIPEL – Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival adalah salah satu lembaga yang giat mengenalkan kata ini—untuk konteks filem—sejak perhelatannya yang pertama di tahun 2013. Bagaimana kita sekarang dapat mengandaikan praktik kurasi yang mampu mengaitjalinkan relevansi topik-topik terkini dengan alur sejarah dan kesezamanan sinema (termasuk ide, alat, medium, dan sistemnya) dalam budaya kontemporer seni-seni visual?

Layak didiskusikan relevansi (serta signifikansi) istilah ‘kurator’ dan ‘kuratorial’ dalam konteks sinema Indonesia, serta apa yang menjadikannya khas. Misalnya, posisi strategis kurator (filem) di hadapan publik perfileman Indonesia, peran khususnya dalam menggarap fokus kuratorialnya, dan mengelaborasikan tawaran-tawaran oleh ‘ranah visual’ yang lain? Berbeda daripada sekadar kritikus, esais, konvenor, atau penyelenggara acara, ‘kurator filem’ memainkan perannya sebagai seorang arkitek yang mengajukan pemahaman antara karya, pengkarya, lembaga penyelenggara, pemangku kepentingan dan kebijakan, serta publik, untuk sama-sama menyetarakan—bukan menyamakan—perspektif dalam melihat persoalan paling polemis dari sinema, seni, media dan sosialita. Di situ, kurator adalah pelaku visioner yang mempertautkan teori, sejarah, dan kenyataan-kenyataan yang ada sekarang; menentukan nilai, menimbang gelagat dan kecenderungan terkini di beragam lintas keranahan dalam upayanya mendefinisikan peta sinema dalam konteks festival-festival di berbagai wilayah global.

Menghadirkan para pembicara kunci—May Adadol (Thailand), Jonathan Manullang (Indonesia), dan Shireen/Merv (Filipina)—yang berpengalaman dalam topik ini, khususnya pada bidang ‘gambar bergerak’ dan ‘seni visual’, diskusi ini bertujuan untuk menemukan celah-celah taktis dalam rangka merumuskan gagasan ‘kurator filem’ bagi progresivitas wacana perfileman di Indonesia.

“Curator, Cinema, And Public”

‘Curator’ is not a word commonly used in Indonesian cinema sphere. ARKIPEL – Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival is one of few vigorous institutions who introduced this word within cinematic context since the festival’s first run in 2013. How do we now speculate on curatorial practices which are able to link the relevance of recent topics with history flow and cinema contemporaneity?

It’s befitting to discuss what and how relevance (and significance) the term of ‘curator’ and ‘curatorial’ in the context Indonesian cinema, as well as what makes it unique, e.g., strategic position of (film) curator in public of Indonesian cinema, his/her special role working on curatorial focus, and elaborating suggestions of other visual realm. Unlike critics, essayist, convenor, or programmer, ‘film curator’ seems to take a role of architect who bridge the comprehension and understanding between the works, artists, organizers, stakeholders, policy makers and the public, so they can equalize and synchronize—instead of to be conformable—their perspectives in viewing the most polemic issue of cinema, art, media, as well as socialite. In that respect, curators are visionary actors who are able to correlate theories, histories, and the realities that exist right now; who determine the values, cogitate the signs and latest trends in a variety of cross-disciplines, in an attempt to define and specify a map of cinema in the context of festivals in various global regions.

Presenting keynote speakers—May Adadol (Thailand), Jonathan Manullang (Indonesia), and Shireen/Merv (Philippines)—with expertise in the field especially in ‘moving image’ and ‘visual art’, this discussion aims to discover tactical loopholes to formulate ‘film curatorship’ for the progressiveness of Indonesian cinema sphere.
