Ateng, seorang pemuda rantau dari Jember, bekerja di perkebunan Pala, Minahasa Utara. Kultur Minahasa Utara sendiri mayoritas berupa identitas homogen dalam sebuah sistem keyakinan tertentu: tampak dari simbol-simbol yang menghiasi sepanjang jalan pada halaman rumah-rumah penduduk. Namun, Budiono, nama asli pemuda itu, bisa diterima oleh warga untuk bekerja, dan tinggal di sebuah rumah perkebunan. Di perantauan, ia tak bisa memungkiri keterikatan identitas asal-muasal leluhurnya. Hal itu terungkap dalam alam bawah sadarnya: ia dirasuki leluhurnya sendiri. Dialog dalam peristiwa kesurupan itu mempertegas identitas asal tersebut: komunikasi yang tak terjembatani akibat perbedaan bahasa. Identitas asal merupakan hal yang selalu hadir dan menyertai Ateng di mana pun ia berada.
Ateng, a young immigrants from Jember, working on plantations of nutmeg, North Minahasa. Majority culture of this region itself is in the form of a homogeneous identity within a particular belief system: it’s look of symbols that adorn all the way in the yard of people’s houses. However, Budiono, the real name of the young man, is accepted by the citizens for work, and lived in a plantation home. Overseas, he could not deny an identity engagement to his ancestral origins. It was revealed in his subconscious: he was possessed by his own ancestors. Dialogue in the trance event reinforce the identity of origin: communication was unbridgeable due to language differences. The identity of the origin always is present and accompanies Ateng wherever he is.
