Tahun 2008, pada karya News from Ideological Antiquity: Marx/Eisenstein/Capital, Kluge berusaha membawa gagasan Marx yang belum kadaluarsa pada konteks kekinian. Secara sinematis, Kluge berusaha untuk mengembalikan gagasan marxian pada kepentingan awalnya, yakni mempertanyakan kembali persepsi terhadap realitas sebagai sesuatu yang memiliki konstruksi politis, selain sinema sebagai sebuah cara melihat realitas memiliki signifikasi dan potensi penting mentransformasi pemikiran Marx dalam situasi masyarakat kekiniaan.
Alexander Kluge, sutradara yang banyak menggunakan bahan baku dokumenteris dalam berkarya, banyak mengambil tema-tema sejarah dan keseharian para kelas pekerja. Kluge banyak menyinambungkan antara sinema dengan situasi sosial-politik kekiniaan. Demikan pula dengan cara berkaryanya, ia tidak membedakan antara menulis teks dan membuat filem sehingga ia seringkali membuat kolase sebagai gaya dalam memadukan antara hal-hal yang dokumentatif, fiksi, dan teks. Latar intelektualnya yang dekat dengan pemikiran mazhab Frankfurt, menjadikan ia sangat artikulatif terhadap teori-teori sosial dalam mengembangkan gagasan sinemanya. Terkait dengan perihal epistemologis terhadap keberadaan medium filem, Kluge banyak memanfaatkan filem sebagai perihal yang sosiologis dalam kebudayaan kapitalisme lanjut. Ia seringkali memandang sinema sebagai moda representasi dan ruang publik yang transformatif.
Indonesia, yang sedang mengalami tahun politik, khususnya pada peristiwa Pemilihan Umum 2014, peran-peran media massa, baik televisi maupun media sosial, telah membuat pergeseran partisipasi politik masyarakat yang cukup signifikan dalam mengartikulasikan kesadaran politiknya. Kehadiran televisi dan media sosial telah menggeser partisipasi politik yang pada masa sebelumnya—khususnya pada masa pasca reformasi, ketika masyarakat banyak memainkan peran partisipasi politik di ‘lapangan’ realitas dalam bentuk politik massa. Kini pada Pemilu 2014, partisipasi masyarakat telah dikanalisasi pada partisipasi politik yang bermuara pada ruang-ruang domestik melalui layar televisi dan media sosial. Sayangnya, peran media televisi sendiri, belum sanggup memainkan potensi bahasa filemisnya sebagai bahasa yang mampu mengatasi kompleksitas permasalah sosial politik masyarakat itu. Justru, yang terjadi adalah banjir ‘image’ dan informasi di media massa televisi kita pada tahun politik kali ini. Hal tersebut tentu sangat mengurangi peran media televisi sebagai medium yang sanggup membawa pengalaman masyarakat sebagai pengalaman bersama atau pengalaman kebangsaan.

In 2008, Alexander Kluge published News from Ideological Antiquity: Marx/Eisenstein/Capital, an attempt to bring Marx’s ideas for contemporary readers. Cinematically, Kluge attempts to return to early Marx’s idea, namely to question perception as a political construct. He also emphasizes the importance of cinema as a way of looking at reality that can or has a potential to transform Marx’s thought in our present society.
Alexander Kluge, a film director who used many documentary materials in his works, liked to work on the topics of history and the everyday life of working class. His works reflect his attempt to connect cinema and contemporary social political situations. Like all his works, he did not distinguish writing a text from making a film therefore he frequently made a collage as a mode of combining different materials such as documentary, fiction, and texts. His intellectual lineage which was close to the Frankfurt school made him very articulate and well-versed in social and film theories. In regard to the epistemology of filmic medium, Kluge often saw film as a sociological phenomenon of the late capitalism. On the other, he saw cinema as a transformative mode of representation and public sphere.
In Indonesia, which is experiencing a recent political momentum especially with the 2014 General Election, the role that mass media whether television or social media played during the election has radically transformed citizens’ political participation. The intensive involvement of television and social media has shifted political participation from a street and mass based political mobilization popular in the early reform era to a more domestic space of television screens and social media. Unfortunately, television has not yet been able to develop its filmic language to understand the complexities of social political situations. What is happening is a mere excess of images and information that is unable to transcend and bring this society’s experience beyond its confine, that is as a collective national experience as a nation.
