Pasca-Komunis di Eropa Timur dan Kehidupan Kelas Pekerja

Pada 1989 terjadi perubahan radikal di kawasan Eropa Timur karena berkurangnya pengaruh Uni Soviet dan mulainya pengaruh liberalisasi pada otoritas di kawasan tersebut. ini ditandai dengan runtuhnya Tembok Berlin pada 9 November 1989, runtuhnya Tembok Berlin adalah puncak dari protes dan kerusuhan yang terjadi selama beberapa minggu, hingga akhirnya pihak Jerman Timur memberikan izin bagi warganya untuk melintas ke Berlin bagian barat. Diawali dengan revolusi di Polandia, lalu gelombang revolusi menyebar ke seluruh negara Eropa Timur hingga akhirnya Uni Soviet terpecah.

Keberadaan kelas pekerja memiliki sejarah panjang di Eropa Timur. Mereka menjadi aktor utama dalam pergerakan Revolusi Bolshevik dengan menurunkan kekuasaan Tsar yang sudah berkuasa berabad-abad. Sergei Eisenstein mengabadikan perjuangan heroik mereka pada filem October: Ten Days That Shook the World. Pada poster-poster, dan filem-filem era Uni Soviet, kelas pekerja digambarkan begitu heroik, hingga dibuatkan monumen, Worker and Kolkhoz Woman.

Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory yang dibuat oleh Louis Lumière tahun 1895, menampilkan buruh pria dan wanita yang berjalan dari pintu keluar pabrik dan keluar dari frame filem, menuju ke kiri dan kanan hingga tertutup pintunya. Gambaran bersejarah itu menandai sebuah cabang seni baru. Gambaran tentang pekerja ini adalah gambar bergerak tertua yang ditayangkan di layar lebar untuk masyarakat banyak. Kelas pekerja dan filem sudah menjadi sahabat sejak awal dia dibuat. Dan ketiga filem yang akan dibahas, telah melanjutkan keakraban tersebut dalam sudut pandang, regional, dan masa yang berbeda.

Ketiga filem yang ditampilkan, Earth of the Blind (1992), Factory (2004), dan Artel (2006) berada di masa yang sama, pasca-komunis yang dibuat setelah runtuhnya Uni Soviet, hanya saja rentang waktunya yang berbeda. Baik Factory dan Artel tidak memiliki selisih tahun pembuatan yang jauh, dan dibuat oleh sutradara yang sama. Dibandingkan kedua filem tersebut, Earth of the Blind dibuat 2 tahun setelah Lithuania merdeka dari Uni Soviet.

Post-Communism in Eastern Europe and the Life of Working Class

In 1989, there was a radical change in Eastern Europe because of the diminishing influence of Soviet Union and the influence of liberalization just started amongst authorities in that region. It was punctuated with the collapse of Berlin Wall in November 9, 1989. That event was the peak of protests and riots which had occured for many weeks, thus the East German government finally gave permission to its citizens to cross to the west side of Berlin. The revolution in Poland was the starting point, then the revolution wave spread through all countries in Eastern Europe until the fall of Soviet Union.

Eastern Europe has a long history about the existence of the working class. They led the movement of the Bolshevik revolution bringing down the Tsar’s power who had ruled for many centuries. Sergei Eisenstein perpetuated their heroic struggle in the film October: Ten Days That Shook the World. In posters, and films made in Soviet era, the working class was depicted heroically. They were even enshrined as called monument called Worker and Kolkhoz Woman.

Louis Lumière made Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory in 1895. It showed male and female labors walking out of a factory gate and then turned to the left and right edge of the film frame until the gate was closed. That historical image marked the birth of a new art form. The image of the labors is the oldest moving picture shown on big screen for wide audience. Labors and cinema have become best friends since the medium of film was born. And three films in this curatorial, have maintained their intimacy with their own perspective, regional, and time frame.

The three films which will be discussed here are Earth of the Blind (1992), Factory (2004) and Artel (2006). All were made in the same period—Post-Communism—after the fall of Soviet Union, only from different time frames. The production year of Factory and Artel was not far apart. Both were made by a same director, while Earth of the Blind was made just 2 years after Lithuania’s independence from the Soviet Union.

Synopsis

Earth of the Blind menggunakan sepia tone color dengan kontras warna yang rendah, hingga hampir menyerupai filem hitam-putih. Hal ini menyebabkan filem terlihat seperti dibuat pada 1920an, disengaja agar terlihat tua dan rapuh. Tidak ada dialog di filem ini, sebagian besar terisi terus menerus oleh suara ambient, lalu suara kehampaan, dan sedikit suara decitan besi kursi roda.

Earth of the Blind uses sepia tone color with low color contrast, almost resembles a black-and-white filem. This causes the filem looks like it was made in silent era, intentionally to be looked old and fragile. There is no dialogue in the filem, mostly filled by a continuous ambient sound, then the sound of emptiness, and a bit of screeching sound of a metal wheelchair.

Synopsis

Factory dibagi menjadi dua bagian berdasarkan jenis material yang dijadikan obyeknya, pertama adalah baja, dan yang kedua plester (bahan bangunan semacam semen).  Mengawali gambar dengan bidikan dari luar pabrik, dari luar jendela yang memperlihatkan antrian pekerja memasuki pabrik. Filem ini penuh dengan pertentangan, keras dan lembut, dingin dan panas, pria dan wanita. Dan yang paling utama, manusia dan mesin.

Factory is divided into two segments based on the object materials used in the factory. The first is steel, and the second is plaster. The filem begins with a shot from outside the factory. From outside the window, the workers show queuing to go inside the factory. Contradiction is used in the filem, like hard and soft, cold and hot, man and woman, and most importantly, human and machine.

Synopsis

Artel berlatar di utara Rusia yang bersuhu ekstrim dan dekat dengan Arktik. Diawali dengan bidikan pemandangan yang abnormal. Perahu nelayan terbalik di tengah hamparan salju, tiang listrik yang hampir rubuh, suasana pedesaan yang terlihat sepi, kontras dengan suara latar yang ramai, suara-suara anjing, besi beradu, percakapan, angin salju. Hingga muncul sekelompok orang dengan jaket tebal melakukan aktivitas rutin mereka, mencari ikan untuk dimakan dan dijual.

Artel was set in north Russia, which the temprature is extreme, and near to the Arctic. The first scenery shots are unusual. A capsized fishing boat in the middle of a snowfield, a nearly collapsed electric pole, a quiet rural area is in contrast to the bustling sound in the background, iron clanging, the sound of dogs, conversation, and snowy wind. And then a group of people with their thick jackets appear on the screen doing their routines, looking for fishes to be eaten and to be sold.
