The experimentation is in parallel with the paradigm shifts in social science and ethics that follow it. The aesthetic explorations, which range from a dramatic construction with the romantic style of Flaherty up to how to perceive anthropological facts with the style of Sensory Ethnography Lab films, contribute to the discourse on the development of this genre. The latest tendency of this cinema is indeed observational and participatory. But these observation and participation bear their own problems.In representing peripheral subjects, especially those who are far or less exposed to media technology, there is a temptation to treat them as a "discovery”.

ARKIPEL Twilight Zone – Candrawala: 4 films https://arkipel.org/arkipel-twilight-zone-candrawala-4-films/ https://arkipel.org/arkipel-twilight-zone-candrawala-4-films/#respond Tue, 07 Jul 2020 01:00:28 +0000 https://arkipel.org/?p=10539 To this day, there has never been an aesthetic that can be called as the “peculiar” Indonesian film aesthetic. Changes in the economic, social, cultural, and political system throughout Indonesian history have never given birth to film aesthetics. In the course of all the political fluctuations mentioned beforehand, the landscape is obviously the most comprehensive kind of "recording device" that stores and takes notes on the golden age or the downfall in history that occur as a result of various changes in a specific location. If we are aware of that potential, the act of filming the landscape as itself opens up possibilities for the recorded reality of location to unfold. If we are still eager to find the “peculiar” Indonesian film aesthetic, then recording the landscape is a legitimate choice.

Though we ignore them, they still circulate us. These digital items move from the most public spaces to the most private in various internet-mediated communication pools. However, where are they going? Do they leave traces in our memory and presumably emerge in the world wherein communication occurs without the internet? Human oral customs or word of mouth transmission seemly get its best modes, thanks to the internet, to unleash our main desire: to share.

In this digital generation, the audiovisual content creator also has a purpose beyond capturing the reality through the camera, but they have the urge to share and make a statement. For example, the emergence of Instagram Story and Snapchat becomes a space for us to share our daily lives. This also spreads to the concept of Indonesian filmmaking, bringing forth this gesture and technological discourse of here and now, making the act of recording, watching, and self-exhibiting has less limit and gets connected all together.
