During the COVID-19 pandemic the survival of the art ecosystem, including the film industry, is being tested. From production, distribution, consumption, and criticism, the film industry has experienced a huge change. The system or model that has dominated and dictated the film culture is now deteriorating, brought to its end. The COVID-19 pandemic forces us to look back, deconstruct, and criticize the old model of the film industry. Moreover, it urges us to navigate and formulate a new model of film ecosystem that suits our current way of life. This is where the role of film criticism becomes important. FIlm criticism creates opportunities to read and think about film from a new perspective. Film criticism is also a place to revise and reimagine film aesthetics and discourse that are far more inclusive for the society.
This panel is aimed to investigate the role and contribution of film criticism in the film culture and in the public. As a cultural artefact, film can be read in textual, historic, and cultural context. Depending on the lens and position that are chosen, a film can be read in different ways. The important role of film criticism is dissecting the aesthetics of film in terms of its form and composition as well as questioning and uncovering its meaning. It has the potential to circulate film discourse and build a new knowledge for filmmakers and the public. Thus, criticism can be seen as the driving force that deepens and expands film discourse.
This panel invites the speakers to share their ideas, practices, and contribution in the field of film criticism. How does a person’s ideology, understanding, experience and agency build their understanding and response in reading a film? What are the lenses and frameworks that are strategically used to assign meanings to a film? How can one’s point of view contest the dominant film culture and offer a new idea on film aesthetics and discourse?
