Melacak Jejak Hantu Tentakel

Contohnya, ketika pembuat filem ingin menunjukan bagaimana penggambaran masyarakat Asia di filem Hollywood, pembuat film menghadirkan cuplikan Love Is a Many Splendored Thing (1955) sebagai contoh empirisnya.

Tracking the Steps of Tentacled Ghosts

(28/11/2021) The International Competition 1 program is showing a film directed by Bo Wang and Pan Lu, titled Many Undulating Things, which was previously released in 2019. The film can be accessed for free on ARKIPEL Festival website. Before ARKIPEL, this film has been shown in several film festivals, including the Open City Documentary Festival in London, and the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival.

Before watching, I was quite worried about the video player on the Festival ARKIPEL website. Worried of being interrupted by the potential frequent buffering, considering this is the first online ARKIPEL and my first time with this festival. My worries were gone when the video played smoothly with only little buffering at the start, on 720p HD resolution. If you experience connection problems, you can simply adjust the quality of the video to your connection.

Even though it was released two years ago, this film is still relevant to how life is today. As the program curator, Luthfan Nur Rochman, stated that he would like to invite the audience to imagine tentacled creatures born from the effort of moving plants into a glass box.

In this film, the glass box was imagined as a medium to carry the plants stolen from Asian or African colonies by the colonial invaders, back to their origin countries. Bo Wang and Pan Lu examined the complication arising from the impact of the past English colonialism in Hong Kong today.

The filmmakers examined the impact of colonialism from various perspectives. Before going into the root of English colonialism in Hong Kong, the filmmakers reviewed the rates of industrial and economic growth, and as Luthfan mentioned in his curatorial note, how the tentacles of the economic wheels crawl in multiple forms: in the port cranes moving their cargo across the seas, or in construction cranes building real estates in areas notorious for their land shortage.

The visual construction of this film demonstrates the filmmakers’ way of communicating in various ways. Besides shots of places in Hong Kong, the filmmakers also presented archives of films, videos, photos, and illustrations, in a solid composition. For example, when the filmmakers wanted to show the representation of Asian people in Hollywood films, they showed clips from Love is a Many Splendored Thing (1955) as an empirical case.

This film is available to access from November 28th to Desember 4th, 2021, on ARKIPEL Festival website. It will also be screened in Bioskop Forum Lenteng on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at 04.00 PM.
