Persiapan Untuk Menghadapi Realita di Republik Federal Jerman
Pada Jumat (9/8) sore jam 16.30 di GoetheHaus, telah ditayangkan filem karya Harun Farocki yang berjudul “How to Live in the FRG” sebagai bagian dari program Penayangan Khusus Sinema Harun Farocki dari ARKIPEL homoludens. Filem yang berdurasi 83 menit ini adalah filem pertama dalam program Sinema Harun Farocki yang ditayangkan di ARKIPEL homoludens. Ketiga filem lainnya akan ditayangkan pada tanggal 13 Agustus 2018, dengan jam dan lokasi yang sama.
Berasal dari Jerman, Harun Farocki adalah seorang pembuat filem, seniman video dan penulis. Dari tahun 1966 – 2014 dia telah memproduksi lebih dari 120 filem, hingga ia meninggal dunia pada tahun 2014. “How to Live in the FRG” (1990) merupakan salah satu karyanya di mana di dalamnya ia menghadirkan sebuah kompilasi kehidupan simulasi masyarakat.
Sebelum filem dimulai, Micheal Baute yang merupakan bagian dari Harun Farocki Institute, Berlin, mengatakan bahwa filem ini dapat memantik rasa sedih, bosan maupun rasa frustasi penonton. Namun di saat yang sama filem ini juga bisa menjadi tontonan yang memicu tawa.
Diawali dengan adegan persetubuhan dalam sebuah video, struktur cerita ini mengikuti siklus manusia dari lahir hingga kematian. Menggunakan sejenis foreplay dan stimulasi untuk membuka sebuah simulasi kehidupan nyata, filem ini mengambil kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat untuk diamati dan dihadirkan sebagai sebuah representasi.
Peristiwa di atas kemudian diikuti dengan adegan sekelompok wanita yang sedang melakukan simulasi persalinan. Mereka berlatih menjadi bidan dalam suatu adegan yang menggambarkan prosesi persalinan dengan menggunakan boneka. Adegan ini mengingatkan pada suatu proses kelahiran, atau awal siklus hidup manusia. Proses ini kemudian berlanjut, meski dengan tokoh yang berbeda-beda, dengan simulasi-simulasi yang menggambarkan peristiwa pertumbuhan anak hingga ia menjadi dewasa serta gambaran tentang berbagai situasi yang kemungkinan akan dihadapinya pada usia itu.
Selama filem berlangsung suasana dalam ruang mulanya tenang. Jumlah penonton yang hadir ialah sekitar 23 orang. Tak lama setelah filem berjalan, sesekali terdengar suara tawa penonton yang geli melihat montase adegan yang dihadirkan. Tetapi pada sebagian besar filem, mereka terlihat fokus pada layar, mencoba memahami apa yang ingin disampaikan sang pembuat filem.
Tempo filemnya sendiri cukup lambat dan memancing rasa bosan. Meskipun demikian, Michael Baute dapat mengerti jika penonton akan merasa bosan selama filem ini berlangsung terutama dengan adegan-adegan dalam filem yang terkesan repetitif dan sangat bersifat keseharian.
Hal ini terkonfirmasi saat salah seorang penonton bernama Rian bahkan mengatakan bahwa ia merasa bosan ketika menonton filem ini. Bosan dalam artian bahwa ia secara tak langsung tengah melihat kehidupannya sendiri. Menurutnya, filem ini mampu membangkitkan perasaan akrab yang belum pernah ia rasakan di filem lain yang ia tonton. Menurut Anggraeni yang merupakan co-programer Sinema Harun Farocki di ARKIPEL, ia pun mendapat pengalaman yang nyaris sama ketika melihat keseharian yang akrab baginya dihadirkan dalam filem-filem Farocki secara umum. Namun demikian menurutnya, keseharian ini kemudian justru menjadi hal yang ganjil dan aneh ketika diletakkan dalam susunan dan montase Farocki.
Proses tanya jawab berlangsung cukup dinamis. Selain Rian, Otty Widasari dari Forum Lenteng juga sempat melempar pertanyaan terkait konteks sosial pasca pembuatan filem. Michael menanggapi dengan sedikit menceritakan latar sosial di mana kala itu Jerman Barat dan Timur masih terpisah. Simulasi-simulasi sosial kemudian menjadi sebuah cara untuk mengadaptasikan kehidupan di Jerman kepada publiknya. Terutama terkait dengan antisipasi terhadap hal-hal yang tak terduga.
Pada akhirnya, filem ini dapat diartikan dengan banyak cara. Misal bagi saya, semua adegan dalam filem ini berjenis instruksional. Dalam arti, semua adegan tersebut menunjukan orang-orang yang sedang diperintah atau diberikan petunjuk atau sedang berada dalam sebuah stimulasi.

Preparing for Reality in the FRG
On Friday (9/8) at 16.30 in GoetheHaus, one of Harun Farocki’s films titled “How to Live in the FRG” was screened as part of the Special Screening program: The Cinema of Harun Farocki. This 83 minutes film is the first film that was screened in this program during ARKIPEL homoludens. There will be three other Harun Farocki’s films that will be screened on August 13th, 2018, with the same hour and location.
Originated from Germany, Harun Farocki is a filmmaker, video artist, and writer. From 1966 until 2014, he has produced over 120 films up until his death in 2014. “How to Live in the FRG” (1990) is one of his films, in which he presented a compilation of the simulation of life in a society.
Before the film began, Michael Baute from Harun Farocki Institut, Berlin, said that this film might spark some sense of sadness, boredom and even frustration. But at the same time, it can also spark some laughter.
A scene of two people having intercourse in a video becomes the opening of this film. The film structure follows the cycle of human life, from birth until death. By using foreplay and stimulation to open a simulation of the real life, this film observes the everyday life of society and depicts it as a representation.
That scene was followed by a scene where a group of women are in the simulation of labour. Their training to become the midwives involve an act of helping the birth of a baby doll. This scene reminds me of the beginning of the cycle in a human’s life. The story progress with different actors and multiple simulations depicting the growth of children until they reach adulthood, along with the depiction of many possible situations that one might encounter at that stage of life.
During the screening, the atmosphere in the room was rather quiet with about 23 audiences. But then, a laughter starts to erupt from the audience when they are entertained by the montage of the film. Even so, I can conclude that the audience are focused on the screen for most of the duration, trying to understand the message the filmmakers were trying to convey.
The film’s pace is quite slow and, in a way, it evokes boredom. Even so, Michael Baute can understand if the audiences feel bored especially when we consider the scenes in the film that seem repetitive and so much about the everyday mundane life.
This statement was confirmed when one of the audiences named Rian even said that he felt bored when watching this film. His boredom is in the sense that he was indirectly looking at his own life. According to him, this film is able to generate a familiar feeling that he had never felt in other films he watched. According to Anggraeni, who is a co-programmer of this screening, she also had a similar experience when watching the everyday life familiar to her in Farocki’s films in general. However, according to her, these daily life stuff turn into something uncanny and strange when they are situated in the montage and arrangement of Harun Farocki.
The Q&A session was quite dynamic where aside of Rian, Otty Widasari from Forum Lenteng also delivered a question. She asked about the social context after the making of this film, considering that Germany has also experienced a significant change in that period. Responding to this, Michael told the social background of this film where the East and West Germany were still separated from each other. To adapt into the life of Germany, social simulations then have become a solution especially when it comes to anticipating unpredictable things.
At last, this film might be interpreted in many ways. For me, for example, every scene in this film is very instructional. In the sense that the act of the people is the gesture of people under certain commands, instructions or even within a stimulation.
