Kami harap Anda dalam keadaan sehat dan tetap optimis dalam situasi pandemi yang melanda dunia saat ini. Semoga saja situasi ini akan segera berubah seiring dengan kedisiplinan kita untuk taat menerapkan protokol kesehatan agar penyebaran virus COVID-19 segera teratasi.

Situasi yang tidak menentu di berbagai belahan dunia, demikian pula di Indonesia, telah mendorong kita untuk mencari cara untuk dapat bertahan sembari berusaha menemukan alternatif strategi dalam menghadirkan sinema di masyarakat. Ada banyak contoh yang telah dilakukan oleh berbagai individu, organisasi, dan festival demi menjaga nyala sinema di dunia. Tentu saja hal tersebut sangatlah membantu terlebih dalam keadaan ketika kita hampir tidak punya alternatif lain untuk mendapatkan ruang menonton yang lebih layak dalam situasi pandemi.

Beberapa bulan silam, ARKIPEL Twilight Zone yang seharusnya diadakan pada Agustus 2020 telah kami umumkan untuk diundur menjadi 22-28 November 2020. Saat memutuskan pemunduran itu kami sangat berharap situasi di Jakarta dan Indonesia akan membaik. Namun, yang terjadi justru sebaliknya. Oleh karenanya, kami terus mencari alternatif lain: tentu pilihan yang paling lumrah adalah dengan mengadakan festival secara daring melalui platform-platform video streaming yang sudah tersedia. Beberapa pertimbangan utama seperti keamanan filem dari pembajakan dan permasalahan akses dan infrastruktur digital di Indonesia yang tak memadai (untuk dapat memadai membutuhkan biaya yang cukup besar) membuat pilihan untuk beralih ke daring terpaksa kami hapus dari daftar alternatif tersebut.

Maka, atas beberapa pertimbangan di atas dan setelah melihat kondisi terakhir di Jakarta, di mana grafik pertambahan infeksi virus belum menurun dan bahkan bertambah besar, kami memutuskan bahwa ARKIPEL Twilight Zone 2020 kami tunda untuk dilaksanakan pada Agustus 2021 secara luring.

Beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan:

1. Pada Agustus 2021 tema festival tetap Twilight Zone.
2. Filem-filem yang terpilih dalam program Kompetisi Internasional tahun ini (2020) akan ditayangkan pada bulan Agustus 2021 secara luring.
3. Pada tahun 2021 tidak akan dibuka open submission untuk program Kompetisi Internasional.
4. Untuk program kuratorial yang terkait tema Twilight Zone juga tidak akan berubah, kami hanya akan memperlebar tema kuratorial dengan melihat fenomena sinema selama pandemi.
5. Pada 6-8 November 2020, sesuai dengan jadwal, acara yang tetap kami laksanakan adalah Forum Festival (simposium film). Bagi kami, simposium ini tetap menjadi penting diadakan guna melihat situasi paling aktual dari respon dunia filem/sinema terhadap situasi pandemi. Simposium akan diadakan secara daring dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Kami mengundang setiap orang untuk mengikutinya.

Dear friends and filmmakers,

We wish you good health and hopefulness amid this ongoing pandemic that sweeps the world today. Hopefully, this situation will change soon as we increase our discipline to adhere to health protocols that might decrease the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The uncertain situation in various parts of the world, as well as in Indonesia, has encouraged us to look for ways to survive while trying to find alternative strategies to present cinema in society. Many examples have been done by various individuals, organizations, and festivals to keep the cinema alive in the world. Indeed, this is helpful, especially when we have almost no other alternative to bring a decent cinema space in this pandemic.

Several months ago, we announced that we must postpone the ARKIPEL Twilight Zone, which was supposed to occur in August 2020, to 22-28 November 2020. When we decided that postponement, we genuinely hoped that the situation in Jakarta and Indonesia would improve. However, the opposite condition happened. Therefore, we continue to look for other alternatives; indeed, the most common option is to hold an online festival through available video streaming platforms. Some of the primary considerations, such as film security from piracy and access issues and inadequate digital infrastructure in Indonesia (it requires a large amount of money to make it adequate), push us to eliminate the online festival from our list of alternative options.

Therefore, based on some of the considerations above and after seeing the latest conditions in Jakarta, where the spike of virus infection has not decreased and is even getting worse, we decide to postpone the ARKIPEL 2020 Twilight Zone and will present it later offline in August 2021.

Several things to note:

1. In August 2021, the theme of the festival will still be “Twilight Zone”.
2. The films selected in this year’s International Competition program (2020) will be screened in August 2021 offline.
3. In 2021, there will be no open submissions for the International Competition program.
4. For curatorial programs related to the Twilight Zone theme, we will only widen the curatorial theme by looking at the phenomena of cinema during the pandemic
5. On 6-8 November 2020, according to schedule, the event that we will continue to carry out is the Forum Festival (film symposium). For us, this symposium is necessary to hold to see the most actual situation of the response of the film/cinema world to the pandemic. ARKIPEL will organize the symposium online in the Indonesian language. We invite everyone to participate in this Forum Festival.
