Preface by AFRIAN PURNAMA

Who invented the Moon Buggy? (atau Sinong Lumikha ng Yoyo? Sinong Lumikha ng Moon Buggy?) dan Balikbayan #1 Memories of Overdevelopment Redux VI.

Kidlat Tahimik (born October 3, 1942) is a Filipino-born artist. His films’ achievements have made him considered as one of the most crucial figures of Southeast Asian cinema who is able to express the duality of locality and globalization into the cinema language. Naivety here works as an attempt to put a distance between the far and outcasted ones with the local and daily ones, giving birth to disoriented geographical anatomy.

ARKIPEL homoludens – the 6th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, 2018, will present a program of Kidlat Tahimik to discuss his works by screening three of his films, which are considered essential and have the same spirit with homoludens as our theme this year. The films are The Perfumed Nightmare (or Mababangong bangungot), Who invented the Yo-yo? Who invented the Moon Buggy? (or Sinong Lumikha ng Yoyo? Sinong Lumikha ng Moon Buggy?), and Balikbayan #1 Memories of Overdevelopment Redux VI. This program will be presented by Merv Espina, curator and film activist from the Philippines.

This quasi-sequel to The Perfumed Nightmare still deals with technology and mode of transport, but this time around is with a home-made rocket yo-yo – a toy largely known as the invention of a Filipino. The hero played by Kidlat Tahimik himself teams up with a bunch of kids on a Bavarian farm to work on a spaceship project to see if one can play yo-yo on the moon.

Dibuat dengan 16mm (1979–1980-an) dan video (1990-an – 2017).

As the ultimate enfant terrible of Philippine cinema, avant-gardist Kidlat Tahimik refuses to settle on anything, whether it’s the telling of a colonial past, or any version of this film, which he’s been making and revising for nearly four decades. BalikBayan, which means “returnee” in Filipino, is partly about the homecoming of the historical figure Enrique of Malacca, a Malay who Tahimik first played and brought to the screen in 1979. As the slave of the 16th-century Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, he circumnavigated the Earth, before returning home as a free man. Old footage of Enrique, played by the young Tahimik, is mixed with the fictional story of a mysterious old man, played by the present-day Tahimik, and documentary footage of a contemporary artist community in Baguio, in the northern Philippines. In this version, Redux VI, Tahimik continues his quest to reconsider the Philippines’ colonial legacy. Shot on 16mm (1979–1980s) and video (1990s–2017).
